hoag, "all fools day" has always been based on cruelty and mischief. its origins (in case nobody already mentioned this) were in an old Roman festival, that they in turn got from some animistic ritual of their predecessors. in the roman practice, the fool (a.k.a. scapegoat or lord of misrule) was executed (sacrificed) at the end of the festival.
