On the botton of your screen shot you can see a row of object primatives, next to that a sqaure with three colors in it and next to that a grey down arrow. Clicking on the grey down arrow allows you the option to select meshes or groups that are in the scene. If your .obj is grouped I would look under groups first...if the .obj is truly loaded its name will appear in the list. If it doesn't I would look under meshes...again if it is truly loaded the name should appear. When you click on the name to select the object you will get the items you show circled as #2 whether the object is visible in the scene or not.
