THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Several PHP fixes are now in place - readme for 04/05/06

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 5:53 PM · edited Sat, 14 December 2024 at 2:58 AM

This note from our buddy, Tommy (one of our site programmers) --------------------------------------------- The following items have been fixed: 1.) Username added to ebot notification subject line. 2.) Thread subject added to ebot notification 3.) A back to "top" link has been added to the bottom of each thread page. 4.) Thread replies now default to "Notify me when someone replies" instead of having to check the box. We will be addressing the following issues within the next 24 hours: 1.) The confusion with "Mark All Read" functionality 2.) Restoring missing links in pre-conversion threads 3.) Putting dates on messages without replies (Thanks Tommy!)

I know...there, there. There are a lot of globally activated use options I'll keep suggesting to the Admins, this is one of them. 😊

Yeah, now I'll have to go back to unchecking that box everytime, but hey, I used to do it before so no biggie. At least I'm used to unchecking it, was good for the two days that I didn't have to remember.

Ang25 ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 6:16 PM

OK sorry to complain, but that "Back to Top" is useless, it would be fabulous if they would make it be the same as "Top of Forum" instead.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 05 April 2006 at 6:24 PM

"Back To Top" was a big, desperate suggestion/demand that hordes of members seemed to want. Go figure. Looks like they could add "Top of Forum" right next to "Back To Top", though....;o)

Yup, we need [top of forum] on EVERY post. I reckon that's the single most important 'logic' missing here. AgentSmith, couldn't you just tell that Tommy guy; Ang has demanded it, and she's threatened to get her whip out or something? Len.

Quote - "1.) The confusion with "Mark All Read" functionality"

is this the same as the problem I reported in the test thread on the MojoWorld forum, where simply reading a thread does not mark things as read, but I apparently instead have to explicitly click the 'mark as read' link to mark things as read? or does it refer to something else? another thing which was reported on the test thread on the MojoWorld forum -- "bumping" of threads. threads are currently listed in order of the date/time stamp of the first post in the thread. is there any way that they can be listed by the date/time stamp of the most recent post in the thread? something I haven't asked on the Mojo forum yet, and I don't regularly read enough of the other forums to know if this is an issue only in the Mojo forum or if it's everywhere... the most oldest thread shown on the MojoWorld forum is from Feb 24th. are older message threads from the archive going to be posted eventually? I thought I read somewhere that the forums were converted "from oldest to newest," so I was expecting more of the archive / old messages to be there. thanks much - I'm sure after these days of 'growing pains' that all these changes will be well worth the effort!

SO, I'm not complaining really but... I get avatars I get increased performance? I get smileys I get compressed threads I lose ease of navigation to stuff like "my gallery" I lose color and layout control I lose thread navigation I lose useability I temporarily lose some link function I lose consistancy across the site hmmmm...I'd trade EVERYTHING in the get column for colors. I'll freely admit I didn't read the pre-change threads where the advantages of this change were probably mentioned and I am sure this will all get worked out and be just fine in the end but at the moment...I gotta call it a lose lose. If this were a new relase of a software product "upgrade" to a loyal customer base the provider would get butchered. Maybe I am too close to the issue being in software and working directly with customers to represent their needs, but they would absolutely KILL me for something like this...and they actually LIKE me. So far from this end it looks like..."Let's put in PHP then scramble to get them back the functionality we took away." I feel very much like I've been given some shiny new toys to mask the fact that some of the regular tools I use have been taken away or tucked into well hidden corners. All that being said I give you FULL marks, AS, for being communicative and honest about what is going on and for representing our needs/wants/desires to the powers that be. To that end I apologize for the grousing. I would not want to shoot the messenger. I'm sure it will get more user friendly as we go...as well as easier on the eyes. There, I feel better now.

Erlik ( ) posted Thu, 06 April 2006 at 4:22 AM

Where are the links? I thought my mail program sanitized the mail, although it did leave the links before, but no, there's no link in the e-bots I received. So how am I supposed to go to the thread I subscribed to? And I guess they can add the exact post in the thread, a la DAZ's PHPBB forum.

Will there be (or is there already) a way to show only unread posts/threads? It takes too long for the site to load (using dial-up modem) all posts and show what's read and what hasn't been.

Hmmm, let me get some info for all the replies that has been posted since my last post. (I'd usually rather be sure than guess) I'll be checking into the staff Forums in this morning/afternoon (the 6th), see if they give us an updated list of what was fixed and what is on the chopping block for the current day to be fixed. *Erlik; -There should be links in your ebots. I know mine have changed from a clickable link with the url spelled out, to (post-php) a clickable link with just the word "here" to use. But, there should be something for you to click on. Is there an option in your e-mail program that limits html? AS

Read posts still dont get marked as unread posts for me... this defenitely needs fixing. Posts should be marked as unread upon succesfully loading the page they're on!

Hey, diolma, I think I figured out how to get posts to sort with unread ones listed first. Look at the top right of the forum's message list box (next to wher it shows the numner of pages), and if it says "list by date", then leave it alone as it should be listing unread posts first. However, if it shows "post by last reply", then click it and the posts will be listed with unread ones first. Now if they could just do something about the slow loading pages (especially those little yellow stars)...

Rochr, yes - that's corporate speak for "get used to it, 'cos that's all you're getting". Remember, despite the propaganda, Renderosity is an online store first and an art community a poor second. The shop owners have decided that the community aspect must visually match the store aspect, presumably for a branding purpose that seems important to them. Many members are very pissed off with this move (I know I am). But Renderosity has a lot of momentum that enables it to plough through a lot of resentment. As with previous changes, I suspect the management will try to ride this one out and hope the complaints die down. If the changes significantly negatively impact store sales the management will consider adapting to members wishes. If the changes make no difference to store sales, then this is it. Our choice is to get used to it or go elsewhere.

Yeah, i was afraid of that... I never thought ild say this, but if its turning towards a new kindergarten such as DeviantArt, im more than likely out of here. Weve already lost the easy navigation, as well as the overall pleasant look in favor for some misfit design dated 1996. And the over-using of smilies has already begun, and trust me, this is only the beginning. Now all we really need is for the "WTFOMGBBQNASDAQPWNREFL d00d u r lyek teh soooo hXc!!!!11lolzomg it roxorzz!!!! hehehe"-people to arrive, and the transition is complete... :(

Well I like the new 'mark all before 6pm read' option. Thats a step in the right direction, but the best would be for each thread to be marked as read individually. I'll keep wishing.

Despite my cynicism regarding the commercialism of Rendo (which is my considered opinion, not a scientific fact), it is still a place of some merit. It's worth fighting for. So before leaving, it is worth contacting the admins and letting them know your feelings. Give them a chance to react, and then weigh up your options. We are pissed off. But there is yet hope.

Signatures dont seem to have nl2br() functions applied? Textarea's in forms (such as where u type ur messages or signature) use new line commands for startin a new line. However the data needs br's to start a new line when printing it in an area like a p, div, span or td. To easily do this in php u should print the var with the data in it with nl2br() command. (in case the programmer doesnt know lol) So for instance, u should change: print(stripslashes($row_userdata['signature'])); to: print(nl2br(stripslashes($row_userdata['signature'])));

I'm not familiar with Deviant Art, other than following the odd link there from gfxartist.com, or checking out the latest Rochr imposter...what's the cons for Deviant Art site? What do you mean, "kindergarten"? "easy navigation" -It'll be back. The whole site will be tied back together again. Programmers are having to tackle much trickier bugs first. Gotta make sure the car runs before we adjust the seats. I know it can all suck right now, but the Coords and Mods are taking all our gripes and holding them up on poster boards for the Admins and Programmers to see every day, believe me. And, I'm really not seeing any real "screw'em" attitude going on with the staff. We all want the Forums more comfortable and more familiar just as quickly as you do. Probably faster, since despite the rumors, we really do feel bad when you guys are pissed off, lol! p.s. - What the HECK is Rayraz talking about?! (Maybe we should hire him to program?) 😄

Basically, Deviant Art is about wallpapers, tubes and such, not about art. If I wanted to be nasty, I'd say it's like the worse parts of our Poser forum. :sneaky:

Low caffein levels the other day... Yeah, i believe you. :) Just hope they fix the overall performance of the forums soon though, such as speed, search functions etc. Its still slow as hell here. With the DA and kindergarten i referred to when blinking avatars, smileys and other fairly pointless features are so overused, that it nearly kills normal page performance. Two words in a responce, along with 200 smilies and a 5 page signature is sad to witness. Just hope it doesnt get that bad here.

When my cable company is actually working...yeah, I get speed issues here. I know part of it is from balancing the server out, but mostly from trying to kill bugs while the program is running, lol. There have bene some bug-fixing scripts running. "blinking avatars, smileys and other fairly pointless features" -I tell ya, I was against the idea of avatars, and signatures and such. I want fast over pretty, every time. Uh...in my forums, not my women. (just in case my girlfriend is reading this....) I hope it doesn't get to that bad here either. I'm assuming that having these things are easier/faster to deal with as far as the new PHP server is concerned, or they wouldn't have allowed them. But I agree, I don't really want to have to look past a forum choked with x-mas lights to read about Bryce. But, I could never leave my home either. 😉

Greasemonkey is a Firefox extension which lets you to add bits of DHTML ("user scripts") to any web page to change its behavior. In much the same way that ** user CSS** lets you take control of a web page's style, user scripts let you easily control any aspect of a web page's design or interaction.

This is a cross post  of what I put on community site.

"I'm not  pleased.  Too much fluffy, not enough substance.  I vote clean the superfulous candy and toys out of the work room.  Let the avitar, font hungry, smiley tongue wagging, linked signatures  crowd visit any danged blog they want to and have at it with the wistles and bells.  Most  artist nuts are here way past their bed times and my eyes are bleeding already.  I've tired firefox fix posted and doesn't seem to want to stick for me.

Trying to find and mark read post is a farce.

I used to visit Bryce forum with a vengence to learn, learn, learn.  No one seems interested in 3d art anymore only trying to one upsmanship  with toys and complaints."

@ AS   I hope you are getting paid overtime.

New problem experienced currently is:  if I open a thread and back out with browser "back" arrow. the stupid thing just sets there and grinds slowly away.  I can get bact to square one faster by moving to "forum jump" menu or reloading from my browser favorites... I 've used Firefox and IE.

I'll never profess to be a internet wizard but it didn't take a PHD for me to learn old format.

I'm with Rochr,  I may solve my headache by giving up visiting forums and learn fm tuts all over the web.

I just exited and came back using IE.  The unresponsive "back" arrow seems to be Firefox problem.  It works okay with IE.  I haven't touched Firefox settings but I will check with my teenagers before I pass judgement.
