Subject: Xfrog plants from DVD collections - use and problems in vue

Lyne ( ) posted Sun, 09 April 2006 at 5:53 PM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 4:46 AM

Okay...all you great xfrog users in vue..HELP! 1. Do you USE the COLLECTIONS or do you work with xfrog itself? 2. If you use the libraries to import a vob from a DVD, have you had any problems with mapping? Or wrong flower color/type/trans map? I broke down and bought the USA West trees and the European Groundcover DVD sets on sale at DAZ... The first out of the box was that the first one of the Grand Fur trees had no trans or function trans applied on all models- 3ds, obj and vob! The lwo came in all dark... I just figured out how to get the trees pine needle function for the two photos that tree uses (really the trans map setting) off a "good" Grand Fur tree and apply that to the messed up one (that had NO fuction/no trans map)... worked great and this tree with it's pine cones is gorgeous!! I saved it fresh to my hard drive and used 'incorporate texture maps' to hold my settings. Then I found one of the lovely Yarrow weeds has leaves on the bottom of it, that have no trans or function for it and no way to get on from it's color map that I can figure out.. as the other plants in group have no leaf like this...so gave up, deleted the leaf group from the bottom of the plant and saved yarrow new in my vue. And now I would REALLY like to have the mustard weed...but it's flowers have no way to apply a proper trans map and they are DEFAULT BLUE! :( I have contacted Orio and he says to contact sales... I figure I better make a LIST of problem plants before I do that BUT... I am NOT happy with paying $200+ and coming up with these problems... with a version 2 dvd no less. Any thoughts? Anyone fixed the mustard flower? Thanks, Lyne

hi, I modeled the USA West while Walli (Jan Walter Schliep) modeled the European Groundcover, but neither of us two did the VOB conversions of the models. This is to say that we are not aware of possible mistakes that may have happened during the conversions. My advice to contact sales was precisely aimed to give them a list of the problematic files so that the errors can be fixed with an update release. If you need to use the files immediately you don't have to wait for an update release, there is a fast workaround if you use Vue 5 Esprit or Infinite. Select the material that lacks transparency then go the the BASIC material editor. There, activate the transparency, check "use color map", and click on the Invert values button if needed. The color maps of XfrogPlants have embedded transparency and Vue 5 reads it, so you don't really have to have an alpha map to get the transparency, use the color map the way I detailed. Of course when you purchase a product you have the right to have it without mistakes. I'm sure that Greenworks will provide a fast fix. In the meantime, as a temporary workaround, please follow the procedure I described. Orio p.s. I am not familiar with the Groundcover library so I don't know about the yarrow and mustard. If Walli reads this I'm sure he will provide a workaround also. In case he doesn't read I'll take a look at the files and provide help.

hi we found problems here and there with VOB but all are fixed as of a month ago, when we put all libraries on www.cornucopia3d.com as VOB + XFR. Most problems are not on Version 2.0 but it sounds like you have hit a few, and i am guessing you bought during the DAZ sale in january. please email me directly with the model names and numbers and a description. we will reply with replacement models immediately. sorry for the bother, -stewart mcsherry mcsherry@xfrog.com

I bought the shrubs from Daz a couple weeks ago and had a couple problems as Lyne is having. I also bought the bonsia dvd's from Renderosity just a couple weeks ago and had a problem with one the plants, I am wondering if I need to send for replacements also since most of my xfrog plants are used in Vue Inf. :)

Thanks for the help... I will e mail you about the first problems, but afraid I may find more.... so guess rather then waiting until I go through the two collections, I will start with the first three...and yes, I did buy my libraries at DAZ - but NOW during the sale that goes until the end of April. Just got my DVD's on Saturday. Thanks.

I bought two collections from DAZ back in January, and about half of the models on each disk had problems. But using the technique that Orio outlined above, I brought them into Vue just fine and they work great. The Xfrog models that are available at Cornucopia, by the way, have all been pre-checked for problems. Lin

Let me try to help out - anybody on here with any problems with XfrogPlants libraries Version 2, email me at mcsherry@xfrog.com We scrutinized over 1500 VOB in March and we found several small problems - mostly we found some files have missing alpha and missing bump, that can be reset inside VUE without a lot of problems - you can create the missing alpha textures when Vue asks you for one - but we also found a few oddball problems and we burned and released new DVDs which are now perfect. However, since there is a product chain, there is some stock that is going thru some resellers that we shipped earlier than March. Bottom line - we will fix any problems by helping you over email and sending you a replacement DVD free of charge, whatever you bought, from whomever, it is all eligible to be swapped for new DVDs, anytime you need it. Sorry for the bother, we usually dont let any problems get "out the door" Apologies, stewart mcsherry product manager greenworks organic software mcsherry@xfrog.com

Would been nice if all the DVD's had been checked as well. :) I have to agree with Lyne when paying as much as we do for xfrog plants there should not be any problems. I didn't buy from 3CD because I thought getting the DVD's with all the 20 sets of plants was a better buy than paying $14.95 for a set that is only xfr and Vue format.

Those of us that bought versions 1 on CD...do we get a free upgrade to the DVD? Or do you expect us to pay yet another $150.00 to get the additional stuffage?

greenworks ( ) posted Sun, 09 April 2006 at 8:42 PM

our upgrade offer from V1 to V2 is $ 25 per library. we like to make plants and for Version 2 we created everything in 9 formats, which we do not especially recommend. 540 models per library x 22 libraries = 11,000 models. in that mix, we find problems occasionally. we hardly ever hit a modeling problem, rather, we find limitations of import/export such as this OBJ and that OBJ support of X software vs. Y software differ, and we find problems inbetween software releases of the same company, and we find that yes, we make mistakes sometimes during conversion. in the case of Vue, 99 percent of the mistakes are related to alpha missing or bump missing or preview missing. all can be recreated inside Vue, because the color maps are present and they have imbedded alpha, i believe Orio above has detailed the process. stewart mcsherry product manager greenworks organic software mcsherry@xfrog.com

i should add - for any problem you hit - email me at mcsherry@xfrog.com and we will send the solution. we realize there can be problems assigning materials/color/alpha, and/or requested for dvd replacement and we want to help.

dlk30341 ( ) posted Sun, 09 April 2006 at 8:50 PM · edited Sun, 09 April 2006 at 8:54 PM

I'm not paying 25.00 to upgrade...with as many as I have bought...forget it...that's insane. I don't care about 9 formats....and now that you don't recommemd it...well..... Quote "we like to make plants and for Version 2 we created everything in 9 formats, which we do not especially recommend.END QUOTE That's just great, why even bother then if so much a hassle. And NO I will not be restricated to buying from 1 site to get what I need...upgrade wise. That's insane what you are asking 25.00 per upgrade

greenworks ( ) posted Sun, 09 April 2006 at 9:06 PM

we spent 2 years to rebuilt nearly all plant models, gather new improved textures from Version 1 into what is called Version 2. I was stating i dont recommend to try to convert 11,000 files. it was supposed to be a slight joke.

Walli2 ( ) posted Mon, 10 April 2006 at 2:02 AM

Hi, if you need to use the mustard right now, theres an easy fix: open the material and go for the transparency settings. Rightclick the Transparency function and choose Edit function. If you take a look at the Texture map node of transparency channel, you only have to invert the "colors", theres a little black/white icon at the upper right side of the bitmap preview. With this icon you can invert the alpha map , then the flower should look fine. I am sure that Greenworks will offer a fix soon. best, Walli

bruno021 ( ) posted Mon, 10 April 2006 at 2:56 AM

Steward, the basic labrary came free with my XFrog 2.5, in this case can I upgrade to the version 2 at 25$? Would be really cool! Will post this on the yahoo list as well in a couple of days if this goes unanswered.

iloco ( ) posted Mon, 10 April 2006 at 8:15 AM

I sent an email to greenworks(Xfrog) as Lyne was told to do and have yet to receive and answer to my questions which were pretty much as Lynes were. I would also like to know if the red sea and prehistoric dvd's at Daz will be ok if I purchase before they go off sale the End of April. Renderosity don't have those two dvd's so I will need to get them from Daz3d which is cheaper than ordering from Greenworks because of them having to ship overseas. :)

greenworks ( ) posted Mon, 10 April 2006 at 10:13 AM

bruno = yes. iloco = i apologize, i can only find one email and i thought we sent you a fix for the blue polys in a part of a bonsai model. the color of the transparency shader is set to non-black. slide it downward, and the blue transparent color is gone from the leaf. re: libraries at DAZ. they have a few hundreds DVDs, some are a few weeks old, some are from january, in general only alpha problems exist, if you hit anything that makes you unhappy just ask for a replacement DVD from me.

bruno021 ( ) posted Mon, 10 April 2006 at 10:39 AM

Thanks so much, Steward, this is fantastic news! I sent an e-mail to sales@xfrog.com to get the upgrade.

iloco ( ) posted Mon, 10 April 2006 at 12:05 PM

Thanks for the reply. I dont know why the email didnt get to you last nite and this morning. I used the address that was left for Lyne. I will let you know if any problems with the 2 dvds I plan on purchaising before the sale ends this month at Daz3d. :)

Don't make sense to me. :(

I have gotten timely answers from Stewart and feel comfortable that when I do encounter any further problems that 1. I will first try the fix, and 2 if that does not work, I will give a hollar! :) I did spend today getting my DAZ Sampler obp's into Bryce...finally figured it out and all are tucked into their own libraries! :) Yea! I am a bit confused on the blue mustard flower so I will let Stewart give me the new one...I tried every which way to fix that in my vue but could not.
