CD, your image viewer might be caching the images, which is normal for most a lot of viewers, especially any that make thumbs. After using Windows Washer or CCleaner the files are all gone, and after a computer re-start, the index.dat's have all been deleted and re-created, thus purging those also. Now the only way the files really exsist are as files flagged as deleted and they could be brought back with software recovery.
