Subject: The forum as it SHOULD have looked (IMO) [CSS inside]

So, following the thread about the colourcoding of the css, fiddling around and changing bits and pieces, I FINALLY got the forum to look just like I wanted it to: Something that strongly resembles how I was used to it. Mostly black, with white text, it is IMO much nicer to the eyes than the blinding white. I usually avoid forums with white/bright colourschemes because it hurts my eyes. Now at least THAT won't have to keep me away from my (despite everything) belowed Rosity  So here's the CSS code. I can't take the full credit for it, as it's patched together from various sources, but anyway, if you like how it looks, feel free to copy it 😄 /* Adapted from pauljs75, Cherokee69 and TrekkieGrrrl's css */ /* generic hyperlink appearances */ BODY {background-color:000000; color: #CCCCCC;} .content_cell { background-color:#000000; } table.outside_table { width: auto; !important;} a {font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-decoration: underline; font-size: 12px; color: #FFFFFF;} a:hover {color: #336633;} a:visited {color: #909090;} select {z-index: -1;} /* my temporary fix for forum_message_cell bug */ tr[bgcolor] {background-color: #000000; color: #CCCCCC;} td.content_cell {background-color: #000000; color: #FFFFFF;} .forum_headline {font-size:18px; font-weight:bold; padding-top:20px;} #forum_announcement {border:2px solid #404040; } #forum_announcement td {text-align:center; padding:4px;} #forum_outer_table {border:2px solid #404040;} #forum_outer_table td {padding:1px;} #forum_inner_table {background-color: #000000; color: #FFFFFF;} #forum_inner_table th {background-color:#336633; text-align:center; font-weight:bold; color:#FFFFFF; font-size:11px; height:20px;} #forum_inner_table td {height:35px;} .forum_marker_cell { background-color:#000000; } td.forum_name_cell { background-color:#333333; padding-bottom:10px; } a.forum_forumname_link, a.forum_forumname_link:hover, a.forum_forumname_link:visited, a.forum_forumname_link:active { font-size:13px; } a.forum_threadname_link, a.forum_threadname_link:hover, a.forum_threadname_link:visited, a.forum_threadname_link:active { font-size:12px; } .forum_summary_div { font-size:11px; } .forum_author_cell { background-color:#333333; } a.forum_author_link { color: #009900 } a.forum_author_link:hover, a.forum_author_link:active, a.forum_author_link:visited { font-size:11px; } .forum_threads_cell { background-color:#000000; #color: #FFFFFF; font-size:11px; } .forum_posts_cell { background-color:#000000; color: #CCCCCC; font-size:11px; } /* sets appearance for number of views column */ .forum_views_cell { background-color:#333333; font-size:11px; } /* sets appearance of last posted column */ .forum_last_post_cell { background-color:#333333; font-size:10px; } /* sets appearance of group listing */ .forum_group_row_cell { background-color:#000000; font-size:14px; font-weight:bold; } /* The following classes set avatar area appearance */ .forum_avatar_cell { background-color:#495F73; font-size:10px; padding:2px; padding-top:5px; color:#000000; } a.forum_avatar_link, a.forum_avatar_link:hover, a.forum_avatar_link:active, a.forum_avatar_link:visited { font-size:10px; }; /* sets appearance of forum entrys */ .forum_message_cell { background-color:#495F73; color:#FFFFFF; } /* sets descriptive caption for forum entrys */ .forum_message_detail_table { border-bottom:1px solid #808080; padding-top:2px; padding-bottom:2px; } .forum_message_detail_cell { background-color: #000000; color: #FFFFFF; font-size:10px; font-weight: bold; } .forum_divider_cell { background-color:#336633; } /* sets the appearance of quoting in forums */ .forum_quote_div { font-style:italic; padding:12px; color: #FFFFFF; background-color: #495F73; width: 600px; -moz-border-radius: 13px; } */

I tried the code you had in another thread. I didn't mind the colours, but I found that some things didn't show up. - The list of forums in "my options". The text is the same colour as the background. - Some of the text in in the search results for the same reason. - The active page number of the thread list you are on. There were a few other things that I found I couldn't see either, and I don't know enough about CSS to try and fix it. So I went back to the default one.

Acadia, Try the code above. This one is a little different than the one in the other thread. I like this one myself.

This one doesn't have anything "black on black" - of course. That was one of the things that was changed, and the reason why I call this my Final one... 😄 And thanks to Cherokee for getting rid of the white bar (I hope I'm crediting right here?)

Lisbeth, We should probably include PJF in those credits as well. PJF suggested the auto setting for Internet Explorer to get rid of that white streak.

Okay, how do you actually USE such a list of programming thingies... is it called a "css sheet"? I can see where to input the colours I want in that document, but how do you actually USE it? i.e. plug it into Rosity? Also, now I look more closely what's this: color: #CCCCCC mean? i.e. what colour is that CCCCCC stuff and what's it for? "BODY {background-color:6666FF; color: #CCCCCC;}" and will it interfere with my choice of 6666FF for the background? Also, how can I change the text to Times New Roman? I see there's something about "Font Families" in there, but none mentions TNR and I don't know what to change it to.

It WILL interfere with your chosen background. It will make a forum that looks like in my screenshot in the first post. Black background with white, Verdana text.

To use it, you just copy from the first /* and down to the last */ and paste it into that window in your options (the window below the one where you can put in your signature)

And save and that's it.

To change it all to Times Roman ... just change all the places where it says font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; with font-family: Times New Roman;

If you want your blue background instead of the black one, you must seek out the places where the background is #000000; which is black.  #CCCCCC; is a light grey.

Well, I've gone back to the default one again.

For some reason suddenly I'm coming across very many posts...sometimes nearly whole threads, where the the posts appear blank until I highlight and see that there is text there.

Your new theme was working great until a couple hours ago and then it got quirky with not displaying some text in posts.  Not sure why.

Automatic text color changing is not working, Acadia.

My stylesheet is set the white on black, but when I post, the text stays black  in my own posts.

If I manually set the text to white, "I" can read it, but it will be white on white for someone who set the background color to the default white in his CSS-stylesheet.

Well, sheesh!

I was just getting used to that other scheme too :(   It's strange that it worked as it should until a couple hours ago.

I first noticed it after I got a MYSQL Error on the boards. After the Error went away I noticed lots of new gizmos in the reply box, and also that nearly the whole thread I was trying to read was black text on my black background.

Weird.

EDIT:  Hmmm, and the quote system isn't working right either.  I clicked the "quote" link and it should have automatically did the HTM quoting, but it's not in HTML???

Thanks ernyoka1, things look much better now! :)

If they would only bring back support for the "pre" tags, and for attaching ".txt" flies to posts, and fix the search function, then I think I could live with the "new style forums".

I think that I'll wait until such time as the process is automated before I attempt to adjust my color schemes, backgrounds etc..

When it becomes available -- then yes....I'll go for white text on a black background.

It is interesting -- I'd never read a novel that was printed white text on black paper.  But I prefer my monitor screens that way.  Then again: printed paper doesn't glow with its own light.

XENO.. just out of curiosity.. your post is one of the invisible ones, when using my colourscheme.

Did you deliberately change your font colour to black? And if so, why?

I'm just trying to understand why suddenly a lot of people are apparently changing the default black colour to ... black.

And it's annoying because it makes those posts seem blank.

I guess I COULD re-write the css to use the Rosity-blue as an overall background, but.. I prefer white text on black background...

To my knowledge, I DID NOT change my font color to black -- if it is black, then it's involuntary on my part.

Here's a test:

This line of text is 'automatic'.

This line of text is black.

Back to 'automatic' again.  I think that part of what is happening here is that the forum parameters are being tweaked even as we type.  My guess is that it'll be another week or two before things get finalized.

Both the automatic and the black is.. black to me. And therefore unreadable.

Damnation :( Just when I found a colourscheme I liked, Rosity will implement somehting that makes it practically unusable. At the moment almost half the posts here are black-on-black.

I'm using Firefox 1.5  on WinXP btw.

XENOPHONZ, do you use the default colour scheme here?  (I'm trying to track down what triggers this coz it's a PITA)

I hope someone can because it's driving me nuts. I'm using a black background also and many messages, I can't even see unless I highlight the text.

Editing this post.
I used the default also...black text on a white background...but I can also read it as this message comes across as white letters on a black background in my browser so there is something else that's causing the problem.

OK.. just as I thought this was my final CSS, they implemented that new edit thing that makes at least some posts appear as Blac-on-black.

Not useful at all. So as a compromise, here's another version. It uses the "Renderosity Blue" as a background for the posts, making it possible to see both white and black text. White looks best of course, but at least black is legible now.

Here's my personal edit of your CSS Sheet TG, I like the slate colors for backgrounds as they're not as harshly contrasted as black and white are to my eyes. I would like to know how to make every other post have a slightly different shade as the default CSS does by alternating the White and Grey.

I dunno bout you guys but this whole thread made me think that it might be nice to have a sticky thread in the HTML forum with various style sheets for peopleto choose from. Just a thought.

StaceyG ( ) posted Thu, 13 April 2006 at 1:34 PM

Thats a great idea Mizreal.  If someone can start one over there with the first style sheet variation, then I'll go in and make it sticky then members can add to it.

Just whoever starts the thead give me a shout by email (stacey@bondware.com) or IM and I'll jump in and sticky it.

Bobasaur ( ) posted Thu, 13 April 2006 at 2:21 PM

You might consider placing the sticky in more than just the HTML forum. I know I would never think to look there for something like this. I suspect most other's wouldn't either. In fact, I'd bet many many people wouldn't even think of CSS Stylesheets (or don't know what they are) at all.

Before they made me they broke the mold!

all that code makes my eyes glaze over..

are we going to have an easier way to change the colours in future?..something that doesnt require inputting strings of code for the casual viewer would be great..something like a wysiwyg editor?

& just out of curiosity, where do you guys put all that code?..is it specific to a particular browser?

Here is mine but  I cannot get the links to change although I set link and visited to different colors and I couldn't change the light background color at the top and the bottom of the page. Except that I am quite happy with my style :-)

Maybe someone could please give me a hint on how to have that links finally changed?

Puntomaus, try:

a:link {color: #XXXXXX;}

above where you have a:hover (actually, it probably makes no difference where you put it, but there keeps it tidy and easy to find ;-))

Obviously, change XXXXXX to your hex colour of choice.

The mid-blue bars across the top and bottom of the page are, I think, hard coded by Renderosity (it's their corporate image). I doubt those can be changed.

I used that dark blue forum entry background to start with but since about half the forum entries appear with black text it makes them very difficult to read. I chose a mid grey as a compromise - black and white text shows up OK, and it's not too blinding.

BTW, what browser are you using?

.

cherokee69 ( ) posted Mon, 17 April 2006 at 6:41 AM

So, is there a way to block or disable the scrolling marquee some people are using in their sigs? I've seen a few but once word gets around of how to do it, I know their will probably be more people doing that. I'd just like to block them with the stylesheet.

Thank you, I am going to try this :-) I have a hard time with the black text too. At the moment I am simply highlighting it since I want to keep my background color and the blue text color. Luckily not everyone changes the text to black.

I am using Firefox with a different theme, it's called Fusion Alternative.

That's an inconsistency in the way browsers interact with the new Rendo reply box. Here I'm inputting using the reply box automatic text colour in Firefox - you'll see it in your chosen text colour...

Whever you see black text, you can be reasonably sure that member uses Internet Explorer.

Puntomaus ( ) posted Mon, 17 April 2006 at 7:28 AM

Do you set the color to automatic in that Text Color drop down thingy in the reply box? I wonder if it would be black too when you simply type something without setting the color to automatic.

I'm not setting the colour to anything. The reply box opens and I type without adjusting the font in any way. I think that's how most people use the reply box.

Note too how using the return/enter key in Internet Explorer forces

double

line

spaces...

PJF ( ) posted Mon, 17 April 2006 at 7:45 AM

Whereas using that key in Firefox results in
single

spaces.

Weird, eh?
