Subject: OT a bit, cd burning software?

It could also be the media or the speed of the media (e.g.: trying to write at 4x - if drive supports it - with 2x media won't work).  For writing DVDs, I never had success with Nero (maybe that has changed since my last version).  I use RecordNow!  It may be crap, but it can write a DVD.

As ghelmer suggests, make sure:

  1. Latest firmware on CD/DVD drive
  2. Latest burner software + updates
  3. Cabling, DMA, Mode, Filesystem (NTFS is the only way to go for harddrives - ever)
  4. Make sure you are using a CD/DVD format (not NTFS, FAT32, or something OS dependent) - something like Joliet or ISO9960

Also check that you are closing the DVD (DAO) - unless it's DVD-RW and you plan on adding to/removing from it.

If none of that works, might be time for an exchange of burner drive.

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.
