Clicking on the bottom triangle along the left side of the Bryce desktop brings up a menu that contains Gamma Correction. Make sure this is not checked. If it is every time you do something to darken the scene this control shifts the brightness and contrast back towards normal daylight.
Other than that it's like the Henny Youngman Joke;
