Take your wifes machine apart, clean everything. Before my system borked on me, I had to clean everything, it bought me a few months. This means even the power supply(inside). It's a bit of a task but sometimes worth it.......NEXT, re-seat everything, even check the bios battery. If the graphics card is toast, you can try re-seating IT. If not.....then try to pull it and use the onboard video connect.

Symptoms sound like video issue......but ya never know.
