I bought PhilC's tutorial CD as well as "Secrets of Figure Creation with Poser 5" - and I've been known to do modelling on ocassion, for Poser even. ;)
If you really like slugging it out by trial and error, then so be it. But best to have good resources, tutorials, and a place to receive active assistance (forums like this) as well. Be aware that every 3D modelling app (3DSMax, Maya, LW, C4D, Wings, Hex, Shade, ........) has its issues with Poser in one way or another. Most of these are illuminated in this and other forums or in tutorials specific to a particular app. And figure setup is about as difficult as rigging and skinning in any other 3D app. If you have a spare year ot two, trial and error is just for you.

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the
foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg
off.
