To see magnets, you have another choice (3 of them actually), look in the "Display->Deformers" menu, to find:
"Show All"
"Hide All"
"Show Current selection only"
..the default is Currently Only, which is why you need to select the magnet or the body-part it's selected to. If you switch to Show All, you see them all in the editor window and if you switch to Hide All, they stay hidden, even with the body-part selected.
