Er... I'm not sure what you mean by extrude the point, in which direction? Anyway doing that (extrude/normal) just gives you a whole slew of extra points and edges to cope with, not less.
It might be easier to just move the verts into a better position and then disolve some of the excess edges... but I think I need to post this dratted bat in the Wings forum again.....
Anyway thanks to this thread for the impetus to look at my bat again.
