Drifterlee, use different cameras (the dolly is handy) and just set your screen to 1/4 the size you intend to render at.  Set up your scene as you normally would and  then adjust your render dimensions so that it renders as big as you need.  There is no need to work in a huge window just because you want a large image ;-)

I stay within a 600 maximum size and render large
