Subject: whitehouse model at content paradise - untextured?

estherau ( ) posted Thu, 10 August 2006 at 6:39 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 12:14 PM

In the promo pics the whitehouse looks very white. Is it possible they are selling an untextured model and haven't stated this clearly in the promo information? Love esther

No esther the White House is indeed white. Didn't you know it signifies purity and wholesomeness? No wrong can ever come from the White House..Bwahahahahahah!

Yes esther it looks to me that the model is un-textured.

Cheers,

good work, phil. you did that quicker than white on rice

You know, now that I look closely at your texture Phil, I think you may have borrowed part of my new snow texture. There's bits that look strikingly similiar. too similar to be coincidental I think. Well my snow texture is royalty free but I would still like some credit for my work. Anyway my team of experts is analyzing it now to see. Love esther

If I remember right, the White House is white because it was built using sand stone, which is white in color.

aggh - the guilt. Okay Phil I confess. My new snow texture uses parts of your texture. I was hoping no one would notice, but I've been told it's really quite obvious. Sorry. I'll never do it again. Love esther

If PhilC's is a little too plain, then you can always use this one.  Momodot once gave it to me for a project I was working on.

well not bad. I just don't know how good that's going to look on the windows of the whitehouse. I was hoping someone else might buy it first and see if it's easy to make it look okay or not. Also I think an untextured model should be clearly marked as such in the promos. Love esther

The White House should have a pronounced texture.    It was set alight by members of the Royal Marines on August  the 24th (I think), 1814.   The basic idea of the paint scheme (ermmm, white) since then has been to hide  the damage done by the Marines.   My understanding is that it takes a pretty  impressive amount of  The White Stuff to disguise the effects of the Marines' visit.   Mr. Madison  nearly paid a heavy personal price for the war he started so shamelessly.

dphoadley ( ) posted Fri, 11 August 2006 at 2:12 AM

It wasn't so shameless.  The Royal Navy was doing to American Citizen's in American Ships on the high seas what Hizboulla has done recently to Israelis: Kidnap and impressment to serve its own purposes.

I seem to remember that had actually stopped before the war broke out.

That's right, but Great Britain only desisted from violating American  sovereignty two days prior to the outbreak of the war, a little too late.  After the war was over, Britain had by then defeated Napolieon, and therefore the Royal Navy no longer had any pressing need for seamen anyway, so its practice of forced impressment decisted even inside England itself.  In the Treaty of Ghent, there was actually no mention of the impressment, the Causus Belli of the war. One positive thing did come out of the war, America's national Anthem, 'The Stars Spangled Banner,' written in commemeration of the bombardment of  [Fort McHenry](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_McHenry "Fort McHenry").

The idea that interference with shipping was the genuine casus belli is a long-standing myth, but it's still a myth.    (The image of the RN being packed with men grabbed off the streets by press-gangs is largely mythical, too, in fact.)   The maritime states, in general, were not in favour of  war;  those inland were.   The French disrupted American shipping just as much as the British did (most American ships that crossed the Atlantic were sailing to and from Britain, after all), but the US did not declare war on France.   Why not?   Because the French no longer had any territory in North America and because, with Napoleon so cocksure of himself as to be invading Russia, Americans assumed France was going to win the European wars (big mistake).   Just about the first thing the US did after war was declared was to invade Canada, which is a funny way to set about protecting shipping.   Footnote:  among other things that crossed the Atlantic in those ships were the uniforms that the American soldiers wore, which were made in England.

It also looks un optimized for poser IMO, look below the windows and such and you can see booleans errors where the mesh was triangulated.

hmm..part of the cause was communications errors; not only did a potential for peace arrive too late, the most famous battle of the war was fought weeks after it 'ended' (as Johnny Horton fans know..;), actually the White House was burned in reprisal for burning the Canadian equivalent..and the only other silly fact I remember is that one of the officers, a Cockburn, siezed the presses of an American newspaper, and had all the 'c's melted down, to stop them from printing any more bad press about hit..;)

Load the obj file in UVMapper, select Tools, Vertices, Split and click OK. Then save the obj file. That should take care of that.

The only files in the WhiteHouse folder under Textures are:

flag.jpg

metal_Opacity.jpg

RoofFence,jpg

There are lots of  material node settings in the Character file.  I haven't had a chance to move the file to the PC that has Poser to try it out yet but it looks like the model is textured when rendered in P5 or P6.

if you have Poser Six, try setting it's smoothing angle to 22.5 ... that should fix it with no need to split vertices and allow you to use DispMaps if you so wish. (Dispmaps do not work properly on models that have split vertices, since a model that has been split is infact then made up of lots of individual models (faces) which are then each Displaced seperately from it's neighbours and comes out wrong)

the ranges are : 0 - No smoothing at all. Model appears Faceted.
22.5 / 45 - good ranges for having flat areas and round areas - eg Walls and Columns
100 - totally smoothed.

avoid using smoothing in the scene render dialog.. it overrides local settings.....
