You can use the free BBEdit Lite (from http://web.barebones.com) which is a much better tool for this sort of .cr2 hacking anyway, and it will not change the type/creator signatures on "Save". As far as the color picker goes... well, that's a matter of taste, of course. Have you installed all modules? There are lots of freeware plug-ins which show you virtually every possible flavour of colour picking one could only imagine...
