Banth, I think that lion would be called - with more legs than earth lions (which are all multilegged by the way, LOL), though I can't recall if the banths have six or eight - think it's eight but could be wrong.

What would be great too would be a thoat - the Martian horse. 

Just my 2 cents.  Man, I loved those John Carter stories.  I can still remember being 12 years old coming to California on a train and another kid I met on the train let me read one of his books.  Can't remember much of the trip after getting that book.

Wish somebody like Spielberg would make a move about John Carter of Mars - Man!
