Subject: Need help with "dirty" shadows

My understanding of the "Shadow Min Bias" is this that when testing to see if one polygon shadows another, if the points being tested are within that distance, ignore it.

Theoretically, therefore, you should be able to raise the Shadow Min Bias and eventually the various polygons in the hair that are really close will not shadow each other.

You said you tried "messing" with the shadow min bias - how did you "mess" with it? If your Poser units are inches, then you are allowing shadows within .2 inches there. Try 1 inch. But check your units first.
