Like most animals, stringrays will certainly "defend" even if they don't attack. Carl Hiassen has a novel that depends on an accident with a stingray for its climax, and it sounds like Irwin's mistake was comparable to the one Hiassen describes (approach read as threatening). A sad day, to lose a good person.
