Don't forget DAZ|Studio, which does many of the things that Poser can (not all) but has the advantage of being free for the basic download. If you have a traditional art background, you may find that it's all you need - and if it doesn't work out for you, you haven't lost any money. If you get into it in a big way (and be warned, this stuff is addictive!) you can either buy add-on modules for Studio, or go for Poser itself.
