The sceen gamma is the culprit Geert. Gradient, most LCDs are inherintly (sp?) more contrasty than CRTs. I don't have that issue on my Apple monitor at work, though my wife does at home, even with calibration. If you got a good one, you should be able to tweek it so that it more closely matches what you are used to.
