I have a nice scene in mind, reading this. I'm just wondering how many years it would take me to complete it...  ;) 
Maybe it could be a collaboration challenge... Each person models and textures one or more pieces for the scene?  I wonder how that would work out.

Little bit like those painting exercises done by two or more people where each person only hets to see about one inch of the adjoining work, and has to match the transition.  Hmmm....
