THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Totally OT, e-mail service problem (but you're a knowledgable lot..)

diolma ( ) posted Tue, 26 September 2006 at 3:20 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 5:32 AM

I have (had?) 2 free e-mail accounts with yahoo.co.uk. I've had them since 2003, and have had very little problem with either of them until last week, when I suddenly couldn't access either of them.
Now all I get when trying to log in is the "confirm password" page. I do that, and still get bumped back to the "confirm password" page.
I've tried going into my account for both, checked my pwds via the "enter secret stuff" bit, and got what I expected, so my account is still active, but Yahoo doesn't recognise my PWD.

Anyone have any ideas? Has Yahoo gone "Pay-for" only? Has/have both of my accounts been hijacked? or something else?

Alternatively, does anyone know of another free, reliable e-mail (fairly ad-free) service that I could use instead?

I really need an e-mail account, 'cos I'm job-searching, and the internet is the most efficient way I know of getting position notifications.

TIA...

Cheers,
Diolma

PS: Until I get this sorted, any e-mails for diolma2003@yahoo.co.uk cannot be responded to....

I'm thinking about another server you might go to...  try mail.com.  they charge for some services but they may have a free e-mail address for you...    also Hotmail.com.. it's align with MSN and that password thing Microsoft has been pushing around......  Geocities.com was an excellent place to go but now it belongs to Yahoo.com.  they are still around...

1)  Mean time you can try this.....   delete you Yahoo cookie make sure you restart your browser and then try login in again...   the cookie might be corrupted.....

  1. try using a a good anti-spyware program.. you might have spyware preventing your port from connecting correctly....

good luck

Many thx tom271:-)

Hotmail - errm no. Too much spam gets throug (the reason I left it for Yahoo...)

Will try the cookie thing (I'll probably delete all cokies 'cos I can't distinguish betweem them - I'm using Seamonkey as my browser - used to be called Mozilla..)

Diolma, if you have access to a different computer (especially on a different ISP), that would be worth a shot.

With respect to email, have you thought of gmail?  I've got plenty of invites left.

Dunno if you would still need an invite for gmail? (mail.google.com)  If so, I could probably send one. (If Mayray somehow ran out.)

I still use hotmail though. Gmail is for people I already know and hotmail is sorta my spambox and general purpose mail. (Use it for registrations and things like that.) I use the same name here as either of those places.

You could still start a temporary hotmail account for contact purposes or whatever until you get setup with a better provider. Then when you're good to go, either keep it as a general purpose/spambox like I do or dump it completely.

diolma.. gmail is really good. u havta get invited though.... l'll send u one. no spam, no ads. neat stuff. let me know if you want one.

or alternatively..

let me know if you want one.. i'll send the invite to my hotmail accnt... you can access it from there..and then follow the instructions to setting up your gmail accnt. yo don't have to set up another accnt then..just to access your invite.

or do you have another alternative email address you can access?

email me at oceanlaughter@gmail.com  if you ok with that. gmail better than yahoo..btw..

in your browser check to see if you're allowing cookies for your yahoo site. that's stumped me more than once as I only allow cookies at my discression. Anyrate it could be a browser setting.

Hey erosiaart, I've got gmail too!  I've only got 1 invite though.  Dunno how come Mahray's got lots, I only had two to start with, used one getting an email account set up for a guy on the same CAD course as me.

So how do you get more invites then?

Oh, erosiaart - if you get something about chatting on gmail from me, you don't need to worry about it, I thought I was setting up a new contact - then it's talking about "chat".  Not that I mind chatting but I don't expect you can do that - since you're probably in the US - and I'm in the UK.

Hope you don't mind me adding you to my contacts list in Gmail?  If you do, don't worry, I'm sure I can take it off again.  But I only know two other people in gmail...  I guess I was lonely. Lol!

Many thanks for the invite offers, folks:-)

I have a question tho. I use my e-mail for doing job searches. One my job-search accounts e-mails me with an agent's etails of an job that fits the criteria I have chosen.

Would gmail treat these as spam? 'cos if so I fear I couldn't use gmail...:-(
(I really don't know that much about the way spam filters work..)

Diolma

Anything Gmail thinks is spam goes into the Spam folder, where it sits for 30 days before being deleted (if you do nothing).

I've only rarely had false positives with Gmail (real email getting flagged as Spam), and it's easy enough to keep track of.

Been using mail.com free email service for 6 years, use hotmail because of the link up with msn but only use that email address for computer tech sites. If you use hotmail.com DO NOT use the windows/msn live version, i had nothing but headaches from that so stuck with the old hotmail setup.

check out mail.com, its great.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

Well, I finally decided, and have gone with erosiaart's generous offer for an invite:-)

Within the next few days...errm...months, I'll get around to changing my e-mail addy at anywhere I'm still interested in getting e-mails from (including, obviously, here at 'rosity).

Yahoo can be left to wither on the vine.
MSN has already withered (it just doesn't know it yet).

Luckily I don't have all that many pple to inform nor accounts to change:-))

Diolma
