Oh -- the original concept was ancient.  But that doesn't detract from what Otis did.  Nor does it negate the original point that he called the device which he created an elevator.

You could as well argue that Otis couldn't have invented the elevator without earlier developments in metallurgy.  Or that the Wright brothers couldn't have invented the airplane without someone else inventing the internal combustion engine first -- or without ancient weavers figuring out the techniques for creating canvas-like materials first (to fabricate the shell of the aircraft.).  So what?  The Wright brothers still invented the airplane -- and Otis invented the elevator.
