Do you need a browser plug in for this? I just get a red cross as if its a missing image

The National Geographic site requires Real Player, the 1st site comes OK for me, so not sure if anything required for that one.

I get an error for the africa one...."Cannot create Directplay"..or something sill like that...i even did their test they have up and it tells me all is well.....:sad:

For some reason the National Geographic one is working for me now. 

It's really dark there though and I can't see much of anything.  The other site is more well lit.  Not as many noisy bull frogs through, hehe

wait till it gets light, that national geographic one is very active at times. Me and my son are using these cams for his homeschool by observing animal behavior (such as the way the other animals keep their distance when the elephants are around, or the way the different animals interact with each other, etc.)

The dang frogs are hideous!!!!! They go quiet & they really get busy LOL.....THE NG site has less frogs & more crickets etc etc

Grrr!  There were a couple of Rhino on the africam.com site, but I guess the camera guy is having coffee!  They didn't pan the camera and all you could see were their heads off the right side of the screen :(

10 Oct 06 - 0400 Just saw two rhinos ambling around the far side of the waterhole. I could also hear something walking around & snorting & sniffing right by the camera and then it took a leak!! Never did see it but got a good laugh!

you must have just missed it. they were off screen on the left and then slowly walked around the waterhole eating. two of them. I'm hazarding a guess that it was a mother and juvenile based on the relative sizes. they hung out on the right for awhile which is when you must have tuned in.

around sundown there was a group of about a dozen gnus and as the camera tilted up, you could see a large house or lodge with it's electric lights on at the top of the frame. imagine having rhinos in your backyard at night!!

Well it's 5:19 am on the plains of Africa and the birds are already singing.. No animals visible that I can see unless I am blind,..

At the africam.com site I saw some zebra just now, and there was one baby!!!!  Some gazelles or something at the National Geographic site.  That site is  black and white and seems very blurry to me.  :(

They will probably turn on the color soon. It was color yesterday.

BTW, is there a way to take still snapshots from these? (the print scr key makes a screen cap that is synchronized with the video, but I want a still snapshot .

I used a program called fraps to get the picture, it can also make AVIs of the animation.

Well, I finally got to see the first site...I had to roll back my media player version tho :glare:

And The National Geographic one just sits and loads..so have no idea what the problem is there....

Seen alot of zebra, and some gazelles....little after 9 am there now.

Is that Ostrich on the national site?...far as i can tell it is..so windy there its hard to see with that storm blowing in....

Yeah, there's a herd of ostriches that seems to hang out in the distance not too far from the water, and usually once or twice a day they come in and drink.  There's also a family of warthogs that comes 3 or 4 times a day.

I've reached the point where I can recognize some of the individual animals in the groups (like the elephant with one tusk shorter than the other, and another, large cow elephant with one tusk broken off completely) so I can tell that it's the same elephant herd every time and the same warthog family.

what did you use to get the image-grab?

Martian_manhunter the program I mentioned a few posts back is very good, it doesn`t install spyware or mess up your computer and seems to be free or at least some kind of shareware.

Also, this NG site while more active for animals is very windy.  I haven't been watching it much because all I've heard is lots of wind and a duck of some kind, and have seen gazelles which the camera completely ignores in favour of blue chicken-type birds.

It is a smaller picture, too.

You can make the NG one larger by right clicking the icon in the bottom right window and selecting "View in Real Player". Once the image is in the player you can drag it out  to a larger size.  And you can use the tool bar to save the feed link so you don't have to open a browser to view it at all. Just open Real Player and pick the saved feed link and it will automatically start up.

At the africam.com link I saw some baboons a few minutes ago.

At the NG one I saw some elephants!!!! Including a couple baby ones!!!

I'm wondering if Africam is kinda a "poacher catcher" cam.  Last night (day time on the cam) a truck came driving through and the cam zoomed in and followed it for about 15 mins until it left.  It never really came out of the brush, but, you could make out 4 heads in the vehicle when it hit a clearing in the trees.  Although, it could very well have been a park patrol doing rounds.  Very strange.

Darn you, Acadia!  This cam is totally addicting and I have no spare time left! :crying:

what the heck is all that racket going on down there!!!! these birds are making such an annoying noise right now!!! how's an elephant to get some sleep with all that noise!!!! it's night time by the way!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRGGGGGGGHHHH!!! this is the most annoying noise ever!!!!!!

The night sound is frogs, birds don`t make much noise at night, apart from owls.

ahhh!!!!!!!!! just found out they are not birds they are frogs/toads still annoying though!! when does frog hunting season start? after five minutes of this you can get a kind of rythem going, am currently seeing if with accompaniying "oohhmm" noises i can get spiitual enlightenment!!!

it looks like whatever the frogs were discussing has been resolved and they have decided to call it a night!

At the africam.com link there is quite the chorus of bull frogs there at night LOL

Stevieg1965 et al, as I mentioned in a post yesterday, this water hole is only about 200-300 yards away from a large lodge or house of some sort to the southwest, so I'm not surprised you saw a vehicle. I've seen various people walking around by the house. camera is facing in a westerly direction, so the house is to the left. still kinda cool to think you've got rhinos and such in your backyard!

Jeff, I just used the print screen button on my keyboard for those shots...but I have Screenhunter Pro for all my other captures.

Would be kind of cool to get everyone to grab a pic of each animal they see...then post one here that hasnt been seen yet by anyone else

Oh, and about the wild cams...yup, they prolly started out with them trying to catch the poachers...guess it caught on so much on the web till the poachers are getting a bit wary these days...never know where a camera might turn up with millions of eyes upon them :lol:

Ah, sorry fuaho, didn't see your post yesterday.  Rhinos are cool, but, I would love to see a little village of Meerkats in my backyard. :biggrin:

Well, apparently they have different camera operators on different days...This morning I have seen about all the guinea fowl I care to see on the NG site.....the current operator apparently likes birds, and has focused on those guinea mainly all morning..even bypassing the baboons to follow the birds  which would be ok, if they were in short supply..  :glare: {I really wanted a pic of the two baby baboons that were playing in the water} and some type of dog...has a stripe down his side....missed that too in favor of the birds....hopefully when I go back later, they will have changed shifts..

Then on the other site, for the longest time it appeared nobody was manning the camera...got a rough shot of some wildebeasts and zebra...almost too late...then many shots of the ground while the operator had a play....lot of grass detail :bored:

hehe yeah!  I saw plenty of those blue birds myself yesterday.  Actually, other than them panning for some elephants, that's all I saw.  Well, there was one duck in that flock of birds too, and it was amusing to see all of the other birds kind of look at the duck and probably wonder what a strange bird that was,  LOL

I wish there were more animals at the link I posted, at least the camera pans in on the animals that it does see.  I saw quite a large family of baboons yesterday making their way across the ground, and there were some baby ones too.  But instead of sticking with them when they settled down under the trees, it panned back to the pond and a duck. I love ducks, but if there are "live as it happens" baboons in the area I'd much rather see the baboons :)

I saw a Vulture or some kind of large predatory bird at the NG site, but when I took a screen capture using "print screen" button on my keyboard, all that pasted into my graphic program was a live feed of the real player!!!!

I thought print screen was said to work for these?

I just tried this one and it works better. I found that with the Fraps one that my system was laggy and I was having a hard time getting Real Player to work once I opened the Fraps program.

I had totally forgotten about this handy little screenshot utility. I've been using it for years.

Install it. Click on the icon to open the program.  Set up a folder to deposit the screenshots.  Set up a key to use. I stuck with the default ESC key.  Minimize the program window. To take a screenshot simply press your desired key and it will take a screenshot of the window, minus the tool bar and save it as a .jpg file in the folder of your choosing.

I couldn`t get fraps to work with the national geographic site.  :huh:

It was the NG one.  However after those shots I wasn't able to get it to work again. My Real Player window kept freezing up. I've uninstalled Fraps as it seems to cause loads of system lag.  The utility that I posted a link to works really well and there is no lag.

Here is a picture of a deer that was mainly eating the grass.

Even after uninstalling Fraps I couldn't get my real player to work again.  I had to completely reinstall real player. 

Even the static pictures at the national geographic site are slightly blurry, which is why I prefer the other one.

Acadia, It sounds like it was more a problem with realplayer rather than with fraps.

I can't get screenshots now for some reason :(

There are 2 girafs at the NG site.  A Mommy and her baby.  So majestic and cute at the same time!
