Actually, it's more accurate to say that the -user- of the word may mean it to be derogatory. Considering some of what is considered to be 'normal' behavior and attitudes, I take great pride in being a pervert. And a loon. And all those other terms that individuals (who live in great fear of anyone Not Of The Herd) use to try and make them conform, or at least go away. That isn't defending anything. It is called pulling the teeth of an insult by agreeing with the twit. Excellent technique.
