I tried XP64bit over a year ago - works fine on an Athlon64 system. 32 bit apps ran just as stable and fast (or unstable and slow, depending on the app) as on XP 32 bit. The user interface is identical to the standard WinXP.
I also tried Vista RC1. Not entirely happy about it, had to search for options left and right, not unlike a Mac. Haven't found an option yet to let it revert to the clean Win2000 look.
I'd go for XP64. None of that DRM crap, a sleeker UI, and full 64bit functionality.
