In Belgium, we have a long tradition of celebrating All Saints Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls Day (Nov. 2). We go to churchyards and cemetaries on these days, to put flowers on the graves to remember and honour the dead. Until 10 years ago, we didn't celebrate Halloween like Americans do. We didn't even know the name. The last decade, however, Halloween has become popular among youngsters and adolescents because of the costumed parties. I doubt that any of them know the tradition though, but commerce has totally taken over... I think it's madness to commercially plant down a tradition without any roots here, but hey, some people seem to like it... (some hate it too). It changed the whole atmosphere of these days. Edited: We do have a day when children go from door to door to sing songs and receive candy or money, but that's on January 6, the day of the 3 Kings (Driekoningen). Even the adults do this in the late evening and night (not for candy, but for drinks, LOL).
