I finally downloaded some HDRI files and had a go at a test render. I used a HDRI of a eucalypt forest at Berkley, gave a somewhat green tinge. I guess I can sort that out in Photoshop.  Both these renders are as they came out of Bryce. The figure looks far more convincing. I'll post the full image in my gallery later on.

The left render took around 20 minutes, the right one around 5 hours on my Intel MacBook Pro Core Duo.

I did a second trial render to share info on HDRI settings and render time on a MacBook Pro 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo laptop. I used a city-at-dusk spherical probe HDR as the light source. Settings for Bryce IBL were Quality 0, Intensity 100%, HDRI effect 26%, render image as background. Took 33 mins as background task whilst I did other things.

I would be interested in the comments of others, particularly Mac users, regarding this render time, considering this is running as emulation using Rosetta (awaiting universal binary version of Bryce).

The subject of this render is Robbie the Robot from the 1950s Sci-fi film 'Forbidden Planet'. This model was downloaded about 6 years ago as a low res 3DS freebie by 33.6 modem (I can't remember where from). I extensively reworked all the textures of the components and added a bit more complexity and detail into the clear headspace, and reworked the speech blue grill light and front controls.

Comes out remarkably well considering the file has not been tweaked since Bryce 4 days in 2001, and the plastic-look of the black bodywork still looks plasticy to me. :-)

Hi again,  I have been Google-ing thru the internet and via c4dcafe.com found some free mirror-ball style HDRI probe images which should work in Bryce, some are better than others:
