You folks with the dirty pots in your pedals should go to Radio Shack and get some tuner cleaner also generically called pot cleaner or contact cleaner.   Spray it into your potentiometers while working them around.   This will clean the contacts and restore static free operation.  Also make sure the mounting nuts are tightened properly as the gound must be snug to complete the circuit.  The same holds true for your guitar volume and tone controls.
