mrpeabody,
I usually pick up the Guitar Review Guide (just did aamof) and trot over to the stores to see and test the equipment. That means either the short hop to the limited local shop (it's a local shop for local people). ;) Or over to Guitar Center where it's hard to hear the equipment over the wannabees - they really need to consider private sound-proofed booths for sound tests. The have this for the acoustics, but not the electrics.
I totally agree about the effects units sucking tone - the RP200 does a wonderful job of that. ;D
Not playing out any longer. Used to when I lived back in Philly - and had all of my music connections. Since moving to middle-of-nowhere Colorado, not much 'scene' going on here. I'd have to take up 'Country Music' (bleck!). I'd also like to get another electro-acoustic classical guitar and start playing again - been some time, but I can still do Bourree from memory (Recuerdos, need more practice). The problem here is that my practice time has become limited by development.
The only stuff that I have recorded (any more) is my classical work. Mainly used that to critique my playing.
