There is quite a debate going on via the linked thread regarding the fact Renderosity is planning to charge for username changes.  Worth a read if you have a spare 20 minutes or so...

Really not funny but one has to laugh when we recognize when someone is trying to put their hands into your pocket. I find it a contorted apparition in this country where big business is protected by laws and the less privileged, the consumer is not. Legalized thievery is how I refer to it. With the less privileged it’s simply “Buyer beware” and to hell with you henceforth. Large businesses are allowed to follow whatever protocol they decide on. Where is the protection for the little people? A travesty in social ethics.

? Lol...that's a bit lofty for a the subject at hand, but then again I've always been a simple speak kind of mind.

I guess we could just stay with what we have always had. No name changes allowed, ever. I myself would rather have that.

But, to each their own.  :o)

For me, I'll wait till the service is free, or quit this name and start a new one and repost what I wanted.  But then again, I didn't pick a frivilous name so.... there's that.

It’s amusing if it weren’t for the fact that this site is more screwed up now than it has ever been since they can’t get their coding right so that any browser can partake of this site the way it used to.

Now they have the audacity to want to charge you for a name change. It would be interesting if we, the users, charged them for having us on.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Mon, 13 November 2006 at 5:08 AM

I guess in one way we do, we use more than 3Tb of bandwidth a month, lol. But, I know what you are saying. I too have felt the pain of site glitches. Seems to never happen badly until you actually need to make the site work.

Rendo HQ is taking bigger/better steps towards getting the site up to par, stuff they hadn't yet done in the past. Sorry, don't know if I can say more.

I changed my handle once...from 'nu-be' to Pakled, had to redo my entire gallery. Wasn't so bad in '03 when I only had about 20 pictures, but with 220+, I'd think about being Pakled forever..;)

I wonder if it has anything to do with trolling types who constantly change their names...aka aka..;)

Well, I just used my name, and that's not likely to change, so the whole thing doesn't effect me.

However, assuming for the moment that I did want to change by user name, I don't think $10 would be the issue.  Honestly, I pay about that much for a movie ticket these days.

I also don't see it as big business putting a hand in my pocket.  I've learned more from participating here at Rendo than I ever could have from a zillion books on 3d.  I've gotten a lot of exposure for my artwork (which otherwise would just be sitting on my computer, in a house full of cats, in the middle of the countryside, in the middle of the country).

I figure that the site is a business, and that the business has to pay its bills and its employees.  So, if they need to charge a fee for some services ... no biggie.  I wish that I could provide legal services to everyone everywhere for free ... but, hey, dream on.  I've got to charge.  Interestingly, I keep my fees about 60% lower than market value, but many of those poor consumers out there just keep on using my services and then not paying their bill when it's due.  So, I've seen the business end of things from both sides, and I have no beef with Rendo.

That said .... the rants are certainly interesting reading, even if they are unlikely to change my opinion, they are still worth reading if only to understand other's opinions on the matter.

Content Advisory! This message contains profanity

here's a rant: there are better, faster, more developed community-oriented packages out there -in terms of software- than what bondware offers as r'osity's masters. and they're free, their services are also free, and a change like the one they're offering for 10 bucks costs nothing. i'm sure that in their business models they're not ripping anyone off. i just think it's a shitty business model..

rickymaveety ( ) posted Mon, 13 November 2006 at 11:17 AM

So then, the real complaint is with Bondware rather than Rendo?  Or that Rendo should consider moving over to a different package?

I wonder how well that would go over considering the huge stink the last set of changes made.  Mind you, it's not that I disagree with you on that point .... I really don't know what else is out there ... but I can't help but wonder how many people would have hissy fits if there were any more changes.

A bit harsh on those trying to avoid a stalker...But that is the only reason I can think of for a name change.Frankly if Rendo want to make some hard cash that is their business and that's the last I'm going to say on the subject.

I’m sure Rendo makes plenty from their store marketing and offering banner spots to sponsors.

Ricky, just $10 bucks? No wonder cinema sales are way down and they keep increasing the prices to make up for the losses or so they say. Just like the post office always wanting to increase the price of stamps because the Internet has cut into their profits. How is that my fault?

LOL…maybe we should let them hang and shake us by our ankles upside down and any money that drops to the ground out of our pockets they keep. Someone quick, get Poser and Bryce together and get this image. In particular the coins would look great done using HDRI.

Ha ha you sound like my alterego V there Smith. I was actually going to change my username a few years back. To something a little less (pun wait for it) Vile... But did not. I sure as heck am not going to pay $10 to do it. Of course I really am starting to think with the slipping number of users online and the more sites out there with 3D content this is just one more nail in the coffin for O'l Rosity. Shame really she was such good site at one time...

But then again I digress if I changed my name now I really doubt that anyone would know it me. Of course I did reserve that name a long time ago so who knows.

I don't know what do you guys think of Phenomena? Of course I have already reserved it and have never really used it. Maybe I will no longer be Vile? Maybe I should take a vote hehe.

Its either that or PooGas...

LOL, I'm on strike picking up my mail. Don't need it for the bills, and about every three days my mailbox gets stuffed with junk mail. If you don't pick it up long enough, they finally return it to sender.  I asked them what I could do to reduce junk mail, they said I could write each junk mail sender, out of which a lot of them don't leave a return address. I said, BS, you return it.

In other words, I wasn't happy with their service, so I quit using it, just like I do with any business whose service I'm not happy with. Heck, I wasn't happy being born and growing up in a friggin communist country, and I ditched them too, and found a much better one.  There's lots of options in life.

A friend in Melbourne has a nice garden stone wall with two brass mailbox slots. One is for authorised post, the other is marked advertising literature, which goes straight into a hidden bin on the other side of the wall :-)

Yes, Quest .... only $10.  And, I agree with Conniekat,  the market is largely driven by the consumers' options.  If you don't like the price and you don't like the service, go elsewhere.

If you don't want to pay to change your username, either don't change it, or start a new account with a new name, or take your business to another art community that allows you to change your username at will for free.

I seldom go to the movies anymore because of the prices.  More often, I wait a few months until it comes out on HBO and then make my own DVD.  Or, wait another year until it goes on sale at Suncoast.  In other words, I vote with my pocket book.

How is an of this "your fault"??  No one said it was. You have the same right to participate in the market as every other consumer.  Or, go out there and start your own site .... now there's an idea ... why not do that.

I wonder who would be dumb enough to pay a site - any site - ten buckazoids simply to change your online name.... I find myself agreeing with "HappySteve!" it is a poor marketing policy an I wannja change my name to Jack! (no !)

AgentSmith ( ) posted Fri, 17 November 2006 at 2:17 AM

It's pretty much a niche service, imo. The real adavatage is it allows customers, merchants, etc to change their screenname and be able to carry over all their product history.

It's not really a service that Renderosity aimed to have at all, it had just been requested by members for years, and couldn't even be done until the site went php.

For the rest of us, just create a 2nd screenname.  ;o)

Sooo it's just a merchant thingy - O.K. I can see that; a ficticious name statement type of deal only nonsuch. Yeah I had to do that once. Corporations being what they are I could forsee the day when such monicers as bikemouse, Agent Smith et al might be at risk, hate to think if the unforseeable ever happened we'd have to either pay the 10 bucks or pay big time.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2006 at 2:09 AM

Have no idea with what is the real motivation is other just than desiring a different screenname, and in the past a merchant/customer usually wouldn't do it, because their MP history couldn't be taken over.

I would guess that Renderosity charges for it, because its a big pain, and to keep hundreds of people wanting to do it everyday.
