Subject: Searching for a "Gort" robot mesh

Redfern ( ) posted Thu, 09 November 2006 at 8:03 PM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 1:54 PM

Say, does anybody know where I might find a 3D mesh of Gort, the robotic guardian of Klaatu from the movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still"?

I seriously doubt any exist that are rigged for Poser, but that's okay, since the sentinal usually stood still with its arms hanging downwards throughout most of the film.  A static mesh will do fine.  .OBJ format would be best, but I'll be grateful for almost any format.

Sincerely,

Bill

Think I saw a Gort somewhere. Will get back to you.

Can't help with Gort, but here is a link to the Saucer from that film (as well as others).

pixelwks, thanks for the link.  Actually, I already knew about it.

However, the links to the actual models are no longer valid.  They simply lead to the simplenet homepage.  Even Proctor's e-mail link is a dud.  I think he abandoned that site years ago since it hasn't been updated since the late 90s.

While modeling my own vesrion of Klaatu's got me thinking about a Gort mesh.

Still, your efforts are appreciated.  Thanks.

Bill

While it is not Gort.....the Blind Guardian freebie from Sixus1 over at CP might work as a stand-in placeholder until the true Gort comes forth. (it's the best I can do having just dragged myself out of bed...)

Realmling, good call.  Yes, one of the "switched geometry" head morphs does favor a cross between Gort and RoboCop's cranium and the broad chest with seamless shoulders does help to further the comparison.  It's a neat model that can serve a variety of roles.

Yeah, it can function as a "stand-in" until I closer mesh is found.

poser sites' lives sometimes approximate the higher-end actinide elements..;)  There used to be some software out there that would go through a linklist and find dead ones, but heaven knows what it's called. Should be something up at Sourceforge, Nonags, etc.

A mesh could be made, just don't ask me to make it poseable..;)

Here's a [Gort](http://home.comcast.net/~jhe1024/Wavefront/Gort.zip) I made today, which you may be able to use. I didn't have time to UV map it, so it's just a plain OBJ file. I did assign several material zones to it, so you should be able to use procedural textures on it pretty easily.

Hope it helps. 😄

great work on the gort, jack. that jeffbots image (of gort and rennie) tries to load a cookie, in case anyone's interested.

The only thing about it is the visor's an outtie and not an Innie like Gort's as you can see from the photo. Kinda like a reverse bellie button. :tt2:

Aargh... I knew there was something wrong with the head, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I did the work from a sketch, rather than a photo. Guess it's been too long since I watched the movie... 😄

jevans69, sorry I couldn't contact you before now.  You did a pretty darned good job modeling the figure.  Thank you for your generosity!

Could I possibly "bribe" you to take another crack at it?  Obviously, you got the essentials.  And from your second post, I guess the only reason it has any "variations" at all is because you worked from an "interpreted" drawing rather than screen-grabs or publicity snaps.  If I were to provide you with some better reference images and offer either a PayPal transfer or a DAZ gift certificate, would you be willing to model a second version?

If you are interested, let me know and we can negotiate further.

Again, thank you for the edition you've already provided.

Sincerely,

Bill

Klaatu barada N... Necktie... Nickel... It's an "N" word, it's definitely an "N" word!

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Sun, 12 November 2006 at 5:13 PM

you might wish to boolean out the visor zone in the helmet, delete the visor, then put a sphere inside the helmet, jack. just for historical accuracy.

Redfern ( ) posted Sun, 12 November 2006 at 5:55 PM

Actually, the visor was both inside and outside.  Huh?  That is, the upper cranium above the visor's "brim" protruded a skant few millimeters more outward than the lower "face" and jawline.  Thus while the visor retracted "inside" as it rose, when fully lowered, the lower edge covered a thin section of the lower "face".

On a side note, it is thought by several fans that the famous Cylon "scanning eye" was inspired by Gort's "laser vision".  No personnel from the original BSG has stated this in interviews, so it's really just supposition, but one can't deny the superficial resemblance between the two designs.

Sincerely,

Bill

While waiting for jevans69 to hopefully return to this thread, I've taken upon myself to experiment with his generously offered freebie.  It's far from finished, but I thought I'd show what I've so far done.

As you can see, I've removed the hands and swapped the helmet with one of my own.  Gort devotees will no doubt find a myriad of flaws with my version.  I freely admit it's far from perfect.  So far I've made my tweaks within TrueSpace.  Once I complete some new hands, I'll import it into Poser and attempt to use a few magnets to broaden the upper body.

Bill

I'm here... had a train wreck of a weekend, and a monster day at work yesterday, but I'm back. 😄 I think I've still got some of the lower-res meshes that I did when I started modeling ol' Gort, so we might be able to go back to that and use it as a starting point to come up with something better, too. I'll have to pull it off of my computer tonight, but I'll post that version, and we'll see what we can come up with.

Oh, nuts!  I wish I had seen your post before I left for work.  I could have sent you some links to some very nice reference images.  I doubt I can locate them while I'm at the office, firewalls and all that rot.

Oh well, I'll send them this evening.

Cool, yes, that will help considerably, especially with the head.

Refresh my memory, now... when Gort does this, did the visor move, or did the front part of it simply vanish? (Oh, my aching head... I'm going to have to dig up a copy of the film, now! 😄)

Redfern ( ) posted Tue, 14 November 2006 at 8:49 AM

Ah, that provided one of the more eerie moments in the film.  The visor slowly rose, retracting into the helmet, opening like the eye of a cyclopian giant.  We then saw a light through a horizontal slit that flitted back and forth, finally locking into place as an intense beam of white energy lanced out, vaporizing any object it struck.  The drama was of the sequence was conveyed mostly through music rather than overt sound effects.

Only when Klaatu shouted an order at Gort did the monstrous robot slowly lower its visor once more, closing as through the thing were falling asleep.

Sincerely,

Bill

Oh, I just realized, you don't even need to hunt down a copy to play in your VCR or DVD machine.

The Wikipedia article about the movie provided a link to a Google video.  Not just clips, the whole darn film!  I'll admit I'm somewhat doubtful this is a coordinated effort with 20th Century Fox, but at the time I'm writing this post, the link is valid.  (It may not be in the near future, so don't be shocked if you can't access it when this post is a few weeks or months old.)

Rather than link directly to the video and possibly violate R'osity's Terms for Service, here's a link to the Wikipedia article.  Scroll to the "External Links" section and find the one pointing to the Google Video page.

You can also find an on-line copy of "Farewell to the Master", the story by Harry Bates upon which the movie was inspired.

Here's a pic of the new Gort model, just the head. I modeled the moveable part of the visor as a separate mesh, so it can be manipulated and textured separately, and there's a separate area under the visor that can be textured differently for the "laser eye" effect. I need to bring the back of the neck in a little bit from the scalp area, but I think it's pretty close to the sample picture.

I'll build a new body for him next, then see what I can do with the hands. 😄

Redfern ( ) posted Wed, 15 November 2006 at 1:45 PM

Impressive!  I see you even added the "holes" in the "ears".  I'm curious.  Is it just me, or does it seem as though the front of the throat seems rather flush with the jawline of the helmet.  I thought it protruded a tad more, as in these shots:

http://www.uncleodiescollectibles.com/html_lib/gort/00012.html

It could be the angle of the neck and throat causing the effect.  I once had a friend jokingly say if the helmet were to be removed, we'd see Bruce "The Chin" Campbell ("ash" from "Army of Darkness")revealed.

Bill

CaptainJack1 ( ) posted Wed, 15 November 2006 at 2:20 PM

I had trouble with the neck line... in the images from the front, the jaw seems to jut out, but the side images seem to have the neck tilted forward. I was going with the assumption that it was a trick of the shadows. I'll see about pushing the underside of the chin up and back a little, which should give the jaw a more prominent look.

That's funny about Bruce Campbell... I can definitely see that.

More soon... 😄

Quote - I was just wondering who the guy in the suit was. Jeebus he musta been tall!

It was Lock Martin, who was 7' 7" (2.31 m) according to the IMDB.

Redfern ( ) posted Wed, 15 November 2006 at 3:09 PM · edited Wed, 15 November 2006 at 3:11 PM

He was Locke Martin, a part time doorman at Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.  He also served as the spokesperson for a regional dairy dressed as a cowboy.  Martin towered at 7 feet 7 inches (at least according to people involved in the movie).  But all his height, he was relatively weak.  He couldn't hold Michael Rennie or the lead actress in his arms without support.  For long shots with Martin walking away from the camera, lightweight dummies were substituted.

Even with Martin over 7 and a half feetn tall, the production didn't think the robot towering enough, so the suit was given platform shoes (ala Frankenstein) and the helmet added several more inches.  If the interviews on the DVD are correct, the designers engineered a prismatic "periscope" for Martin to view the outside world because his eyes did not reach the level of the visor.  (In certain shots you can spot the visor having been removed for Locke's vision.)

There were two costumes and one rigid "dummy".  One suit fastened up the back for shots showing the robot's front; the other fastened up the front for backside shots.

Sincerely,

Bill

Here's a lil' render experiment with CaptainJack1's Gort, or rather, a modified version.

After giving it a custom helmet and "mitts", I "cut" the figure roughly in half at the waist and used the "taper" tool in TrueSpace to slightly widen the stance of the legs and broaden the shoulders.  The "trunks", being a separately modeled element, hide the now rather jagged division point.

Klaatu's saucer behind Gort is a mesh I whipped up using sub-surface sub-division and extrusion tools.
