A few months ago one of my cats was gone for six days and just turned up near my apartment.  All of mine are indoor cats only, but that one and another tend to escape occasionally and come back when they feel like it.

During that time (late Summer), I kept the windows open so I could hear sounds, left food and catnip outside, and checked often.  It is my understanding that the best time to look for a missing cat is late evening/night and walk around with a flashlight calling for the cat.  Also post flyers.  I paid the neighborhood kids to post them all over the neighborhood also offering a reward.

I was a nervous wreck myself looking all over the neighborhood which had some very dangerous situations including very high temperatures.  I was also in the process of moving locally so I had to find him soon.  If you've moved recently, kitty might be heading back to where he/she used to live.  If this isn't the case, then she could be in the neighborhood, someone might have taken him in and be feeding him, or at worst (which I believe to have been my case) someone stole him.

I suspected a friend of my roommate stole my cat because he made comments frequently that "I will own that cat one day" so he was number one on my list of suspects.  When my roommate filed a report with the police speculating that the friend might have the cat (there were other suspicions as well), they actually went to his house and checked it out.  This was about five days after the cat was missing.  The next day the cat turned up near my door.  Needless to say this "friend" isn't one anymore since he's not allowed in our apartment because he was the last one to leave the house when the cat turned up missing so he had to be the one who let it out.

Our local humane society has a website where you can post information and an image of your missing cat.

I hope you find your kitty.  I'd be heartbroken if I didn't find mine.
