Subject: URGENT! Poser 6 won't launch... Please Help

Francemi ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 9:45 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 1:47 PM

This morning I installed a HP Printer All-in-One software on my computer and it had to uninstall some Windows updates to complete the installation. I don't know if that is the problem but Poser 6 worked fine this morning and now it won't launch. So I reinstalled Poser 6, then SR1, then SR2... It still won't launch. It goes through the routine until it gets to the page where it says who the owner is and the registration number but then it stalls there for a while and then it disappears.

I absolutely need it tonight as I have an anniversary to celebrate tomorrow morning at 9am and I have to render a few scenes to create a greetings card.

Please help me!

Thanks!

check out the poser thread on the xml error.

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2675576

it tells you what xml file might be worth deleting or renaming.

it may be unrelated but errors in that file are generally bad .

do you have the capability to do a system restore?  if so, just  select a date/time before you installed the printer...i have had problems with hp printers also.  if a system restore works then try to let windows install the printer for you...just get the appropriate driver for the printer first.  see if that doesn't solve the problem.  good luck ;)

I would suggest you go back to Windows Update and get the updates re-installed, it probably isn't a really safe thing to uninstall system updates.  The printing software may be in the service of Satan.  ;)

goldie... I tried to do a system restore twice but both times it told me there has been no changes to my computer since that date (yesterday and Nov. 9) so it could not do a system restore. ;o(

pjz99... I already ran Windows Update and the only update it had for my computer was framework 1.1 fix. ;o(

When I choose to open a pz3 file with Poser, I get to see the libraries and I can browse through the libraries... but no document window even then. I'm out of ideas.

Thanks for the suggestions though... both of you.

Francemi, I had the same thing happen when I installed the QuicktimeAlternative program. For some strange reason I couldn't get Poser to open further than the screen you described. I was going crazy trying to find the cause and just by chance uninstalled that program and everything worked fine. So it sounds like you may have the same thing happening. I also have an HP All in One and haven't had any problems, but I don't recall it having to remove any Windows updates either. You might try uninstalling the Printer software and see if Poser will open completely.

pjz99 ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 10:48 PM

One thing you can try if you are willing to do this - uninstall Poser completely, open Registry Editor, go find the branch for Poser under
HKey_Local_MachineSoftware  ....   (curious labs or e frontier?) and delete the whole branch, and re-install.  That's a pretty drastic step, but your install is broken anyway....

Thank you. I have to quit trying for tonight... (I'm so sad that I can't have a card ready by tomorrow morning) but when I come back tomorrow I will try both your suggestions, in that order... if it works by uninstalling the Printer software, fine, if not, I'll try the registry editor.

Just now I uninstalled Poser 6 and then reinstalled (earlier I reinstalled over the existing version). I was able this time to get the document window. So I closed it, quit Poser, installed SR1... Poser won't launch. Installed SR2... After a while of seeing the famous registration number screen, it closes by itself. I feel like throwing the computer out the window. With Christmas in 2 weeks, it doesn't bode well for my cards creation. ;o(

Also try to reinstall graphic drivers maybe Hp altered something in windows that was linked to your graphic drivers.  Just an idea.

eirian ( ) posted Sun, 10 December 2006 at 12:50 AM

I''ve had exactly the same problem. I still don't have a long-term solution but I've narrowed the cause down to the release of quick time I'm forced to install if I want iTunes.

Uninstall quick time and poser works perfectly. Unfortunately this means iTunes won't run and I need both. I tried to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes but I guess I don't have one old enough. Right now, my only solution is to keep uninstalling QT and then run the repair utility on iTunes each time I want to use it. I'm sure this is no good for my PC but until I find a better solution it's the best I can do.

Save your Poser runtime to an external hard drive and/or DVD. Reformat your drive, then reinstall Poser and just copy your runtime back. I have a cheap Laser printer that totally messed up my computer when I installed the software. Why does this happen? Who knows. Good luck.

Francemi ( ) posted Sun, 10 December 2006 at 2:00 PM

Well guys I tried everything except reformat my drive (too many programs installed there). It looks like I won't be using Poser anymore. ;o((

it launches up to the page where the registration number and my name are displayed then it stalls there for a while then it disappears.

Francemi, Truly sorry you couldn't get it back up and running. You don't by any chance have any other version of Poser that you could try and install?

Francemi ( ) posted Sun, 10 December 2006 at 4:03 PM

I have Poser 5 but you know how different it is from Poser 6... Not worth the effort. If I could I would have a technician come here and install Poser 6 AND my printer but after what happened to me last month I don't have any spare money and won't have any for quite a while. I didn't buy that printer, I already had it. It was connected to another computer and I used it in a network but now that I'm alone, I need it on my computer. And I can't spend my time installing and uninstalling the printer, it just makes no sense. So as things are now it seems I have a choice between using Poser or my printer and with Christmas coming up, I need my printer more... I can't afford to buy cards this year but I already have enough ink to print them so I have to make them. I'll use images like I did before I started working with Poser and after the Holidays I'll try again to install Poser.

Thank you all for your suggestions. You tried. ;o)

Hey hun, if you want some generic holiday renders (or no so generic depending on what's in my runtime) be happy to help you out with a couple if you like.

Sorry to hear of the computer woes. =(

Thanks a lot Rach! nruddock, I'll go see that now.

I've just had a chat with a HP technician and she told me it was a corrupted file in the registry and that I had to reinstall Windows XP... yerk! I'M AFRAID TO DO THAT!!!

I think it boils down to the fact that as what is your default printer isn't working, Poser won't start.

You could try using "Add Printer", selecting Generic | Generic / Text Only, and set it as the default printer.
This might just be enough to get you going again.

Tiari ( ) posted Sun, 10 December 2006 at 8:08 PM

As a last resort, try running crap cleaner, which you can get at www.download.com.  Do a search for crap cleaner.  It will clean up the registry and show problems and fix them.

A word of warning tho, if the registry is really fubar, it might cause other problems.  But before you restore your whole system and reinstall windows, you might want to give that a shot.

Also, make sure to do a scan disk, as I was having a slow painfully timed out load until i realized I hadn't done a scandisk in eons.

Francemi ( ) posted Sun, 10 December 2006 at 8:58 PM

Thanks Tiari, I downloaded crap cleaner.

"if the registry is really fubar"... what does that mean?

Fubar = F(insert naughty word here) up beyond all recognition

is what I usually term it. Sure there are other variations out there.

I hope you get that fixed. I don't have any advice.

I have a HP2210 all in one printer but I had it installed long before I got poser.  I don't remember it having to uninstall some files when I installed it though. That seems odd to me.

I know that sometimes when you install  some software  it will occasionally mention the existance of a newer version of a particular file and recommend that you keep the newer version of that file...which I always do.

When I installed Poser 5 and then later Poser 6, I didn't have any issues with it working.

My computer has Windows 2000, so maybe there is a difference with you having XP.  But I still think it's weird that Windows files were uninstalled.

So far as reinstalling Windows XP.... there should be an option to repair Windows and not have to reinstall the whole thing. Reinstalling Windows wipes your hard drive and you'll lose all of your files unless you back them up on CD or external hard drives.

Yes, that''s exactly what I'm afraid of. **But Windows doesn't even want to do a system restore anymore. It keeps telling me there were no changes to my computer even if I choose a restore point far back in time before I installed many programs.

I don't think I'll do that at least not before the Holidays. I still have the other computer and if I can't fix the problem tomorrow am, I'll reinstall the router and use the printer from the other computer via network like I did before. Then after the Holidays I'll try to fix it so I can have it connected to mine. It is awful to have so much problems with a HP Printer installation when I have a HP computer!!!**

Ok, I uninstalled everything, did a cleanup with Norton System Work, used Crap Cleaner, reinstalled the printer, used Crap Cleaner again, reinstalled Poser 6, used Crap Cleaner again, launched Poser 6... it worked BUT I can't open a scene with it and when I close it, I get an error message.

This is the error message:

After I got that message, whether I click on OK or on Cancel, I still can open Poser but I can't do anything in it. If I try to load a scene, I get a blank grey screen and the file menu is not even greyed out. If I do File New, I get the same result. And of course James disappears as soon as I click on Open or New.

Now before I do something else I wondered if by seeing that error message someone here could help me?

Thanks.

ALL THE PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED!!!

Everything works fine now: Poser 6 AND my printer. I sent an email to e-Frontier this morning via their website and the technician replied first with a solution that didn't work then with the solution that solved the problem.

It was my video card driver that was not up-to-date. Why did it work before I installed the printer, I don't know but it doesn'T matter. What matters is that it did solve the problem.

Thanks to all of you who tried to help.

P.S. Do you think I should post about this problem and its solution in another forum somewhere where people can find it easy if they ever have the same problem? If yes, where?

If you want to post it some place, the hardware/technical forum would probably be the place.

Glad it all worked out, i've gotten that error message myself, the memory one, at least now i know what the problem is, its the video card drivers woot

So that there just solved a problem I hadn't asked about yet LOL

Oh yes, P.S. Fubar F.U.B.A.R = F***ed up beyond all recognition LOL

Francemi ( ) posted Mon, 11 December 2006 at 2:46 PM

Well my registry was not FUBAR but there were lots of unnecessary entries so it did something good after all. ;o)

I don't know for sure that the error message was because of the video card driver. Of course I didn't get that message since I updated the driver but I didn't get that message each time I tried to open Poser either. Only when I had just installed it and it opened with casual James in the document window and then I could do no more. Then when I quit I got that message. In any case it would not hurt to have the latest version of your video card driver. ;o)
