The company that created the software does not need permission to ping the program to make sure it is valid. Poser itself connects to your "network" to make sure that it's the only version with its' serial number running at the time, and there are other programs that have to "phone home" a lot to make sure they work (Virtual Fashion comes to mind). While it sucks, it's not illegal.
