Subject: Disappearing Document Window?

pikusuru ( ) posted Fri, 15 December 2006 at 8:56 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 1:52 PM

Hey folks,

I'm having problems reopening scenes.

I have a couple of scenes with V4 that won't display the document window at all when reopened. I just tried reopening a saved scene with Jessi and the document window displays but the camera windows are greyed out.

If I create a new scene it's fine... until I save it and try to reopen it.

Have any of  you run into this or have any ideas what's going on?

I would like to know it. It's a bug that appears in some (not all) of my scenes saved with a V3 inside...

I guess there's some comfort in seeing I'm not the only one that has seen this.

Well after messing around some more it seems to be intermittent.  I've been able to open the sames scenes that will not display the document window a little later in the same Poser session... I'll close it and try and reopen it and it's back to not showing up!?

bizarre...

yes i am having problems. Everyting seems fine, but when I quit out, then come back in, I get an error on the way in. Sometimes it won't let me go in at all, sometimes just gives me the workspace with a missing document area.

P7 V4 Windows XP sp2

I have discovered that if I delete the .pmd, it will let me back in and everything seems okay. What's in the .pmd, anyway?

Damn... I never thought in it... I deleted the files thinking they was corrupted and lost... :cursing:

May be next time...

The pmd contains the morph deltas in compressed form. So you probably need to reinject those... (or completely switch that off...)

I deleted the .pmd and tried loading the scene but I'm asked to locate the pmd file.

I tried switching off the use of file compression and external binary morph targets.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

Poser 6 or 7? I have had problems in Poser 6 with hi-res scenes doing that.

operaguy ( ) posted Sat, 16 December 2006 at 9:59 PM

pikusuru, in other threads people are confirming this issue...and deleting the .pmd does not solve the problem.

You have to turn off "Use external binaries" and run without them until and when they fix this bug.

I lost 15 hours of an intense animation, but have now been operating for 4 hours, with .pmds turned off, with no corrupted files.

Yes, as Operaguy stated.

You have to go into your options and disable "Use External Binary Morphs" if you are using V4.  It has something to do with how they used magnets to replace JCMs.  I don't entirely understand it.

As a note of interest, if you are going to export to another software application for rendering (like Carrara or Bryce, specifically) they do not support the external binary morphs anyway, so that portion of your scene would be lost.

I lost three files (thank goodness still images and not animation, but still) before learning this.

This is a V4 problem only, if you are experiencing it with V3 or a different character, then you are suffering a different problem.

Sorry, I missed the other threads.

Thanks for the help!!

I'll keep external binary morphs off for now.

Hi all, I just had this happen in the Mac version of P7. I found that if I changed the camera angle (in my case to Aux) I had an image and then when I switched back to the main camera everything was how it was supposed to be. As far as I remember that is all I did. I recommend trying this for everyone else, just in case. It could just be a camera hiccup. Happy Holidays! Kiera

kierab ( ) posted Sun, 17 December 2006 at 5:58 AM

Ha! It tried this on me again and I found another way to get everything back. I could not simply switch back to the main camera like last time (didn't work) so I reset the window to show four parts (bottom left icon on the preview window). Then I switched to main and did reset camera and that did the trick. I suppose you could try that without switching to four parts, but that did help me to feel that my image was there, and I really needed the assurance because I did not know if I should save or not and P7 has been so unstable I live in fear of crashing...

kierab ( ) posted Sun, 17 December 2006 at 7:18 AM

Huh, looks like I celebrated too soon. I got the scene back, but when I try to render it it looks like toon line art and that is NOT the setting I have chosen. That just bites. Anybody else had sudden changes to how things are rendering in P7?

ThrommArcadia ( ) posted Mon, 18 December 2006 at 12:15 AM

I haven't run into these types of problems yet and I'm on a PC, but still, I'll keep my eyes open.

If you can replicate it by following a certain pattern, then you should send a message off to tech support at e-f so they area ware of it and maybe can fix it in a patch.

Unfortunately if it can't be replicated with any consistency, I always get a "must be you" back for tech support departments.

kierab ( ) posted Mon, 18 December 2006 at 12:55 AM

I used to do tech support, so I know the drill. :-) It appears to be this current image I am working on, as far as I can tell. I am using the DAZ Gothic Study model, but I used it in my previous image without problems. So perhaps it is one of my characters, but they are all Kiki at the base so that doesn't follow well either. arg. I was so frustrated yesterday, I can't even tell you. It didn't help that I was trying to do "one last image" before leaving for several weeks on holiday. I am going to be POSERLESS. Whaaaaa. So the problem will undoubtedly be waiting for my return... I finally managed to finish my image because I am stubborn and I just kept adjusting the cameras, doing reset camera, fiddling with the lights until finally it rendered. But it was a near thing. I had to set my buckets to SIXTEEN and render 900 by 600 before the stupid thing would go. I don't even know how long it took, I finally gave up and set it to render right before I went to bed because I was sick of looking at it. I can ONLY hope that there is a service pack released by the 15th of January, LOL! Kiera PS. did you know you can only export at 72 dpi? Is it me or is that way stupid?????

ThrommArcadia ( ) posted Mon, 18 December 2006 at 2:07 AM

I didn't notice that!  I would think by now they would have changed that.  Couldn't you choose your dpi back in Poser 5?

It's not a big deal as you can change it easily in something like Photoshop, but it is still very weird.

Ooo, Poserless for several weeks.  That's going to be tough.  You might have to take up another addiction to fill the gap.  lol.

Here's hoping they get a good service release out soon.  Unfortunately, you poor Mac users are going to have to wait another two weeks to a month after.  It always seems that way.

kierab ( ) posted Mon, 18 December 2006 at 7:57 AM

Yes, you could set the DPI - you STILL can, it just DOESN'T WORK.  groan - ah well, it can be fixed but it's just one more hassle with P7 that is annoying me.

I have the laptop from work, but it's PC and I only have the Mac version.  Darn.  I don't suppose there is still somewhere to download P5 for free?  At least then I could still play in the evenings...  Anybody reading this know of one????

I am really afraid I'm going to start seeing pink elephants or be trembling uncontrollably as I come off my Poser fix, LMAO!!!!

I wish I read this earlier. I too thought all my scene files were corrupt and therefore deleted. Now, if there was only a way to recover them...
