I like that idea a lot!  Wow!  It bridges the gap between the surface method and the vertex method.

The concept has me speculating about how one might build upon such weight mapping to convert UV layouts between different objects, too.  Hmm.  I'm not sure how well it would work for converting base shapes of objects between one another....

A lot of potential.  It makes me wish I were smarter.  :)  

So it looks like I need to start on a complete script re-build, implementing a 'raycasting' technique to compare verts to surfaces.
