Just don't get too excited yet - I'm not sure it's a valid theory :).  I like to build test-cases to help visualize things... but the above is a fairly specific/controlled example and may or may not be universally applicable.  It was just a thought-trail, but I think it's probably worth a try.

I'm also not convinced about it working on the low->high case yet, but I hadn't paid close attention to what you've already covered, so I'm not sure it would be any worse than other methods either.

As for the implementation, you or someone else better with the math will have to figure that out :).
