My Mother-out -law had a similar injury, and suprised us all with her recovery. She was home from hospital within days, using a zimmer frame, and then progressing to a walking stick. She went on for another 8 years before leaving us, aged nearly 94, and was known affectionately as "old tin hip".

I did eventually have to give up work to look after her 24/7, but not till she was 91.

Hope your Dad makes an equally good recovery.
