External runtimes (available with P5 and above) allow you to install your content to folders outside of your Poser installation. A couple of benefits include not losing content if you have to uninstall and reinstall, along with keeping your runtimes from becoming bloated and slowing down the Poser loading.
You CAN'T rename the runtimes inside Poser as those are hard coded into the program.
To create an external runtime, all you have to do is create a folder somewhere on your system (mine are out on a USB External Hard Drive) and name it for the type of content going in to it. I currently hav 47 external runtimes named for things like Victoria 3, Hair, Lights, Michael 3 ... like that.
Most of your downloads should be zipped from the Runtime structure so installation is a snap. Just point the zip program to your new folder and everything will be extracted to the appropriate places within the folder. Just be certain NOT to name the new folder Runtime or Poser will become confused and will default back to the native Runtime when looking for elements of what you're adding to the scene.
Any content you purchase from DAZ has an installer that will allow you to browse to the folder you want to install to.
To link the external runtime, just navigate all the way up to the top of your Library palette where you see your Poser runtimes (i.e Poser 6 - Downloads). Down at the bottom of the palette menu click on the + button and it will bring up a dialog box to Add Runtime. It uses an Explorer-type window that allows you to browse to the new folder. Just highlight the folder and click OK and you'll see your new Runtime in the Library palette.
I post this so much, I think I need to do a tut and convert it to pdf ... lol.
If you need further help, PM me through site mail and I'll send you some visuals.
