This circular drum wall built in 1860 shapes the rotunda of the California State Capitol building and rises 160 feet above this viewed level to form the inner dome. The brick steps at the base once helped distrubute the dome's enormous weight. During restoration of the capitol, worker's reinforced the drum exterior (seen to the right of the photo) with concrete and steel. This section of the wall located in the basement of the capitol has been left open so visitors can see some of the original construction.
