I tried searching for this thread, so forgive me if this has already been addressed; Does anyone know how to properly import 3DS or lightwave models into Poser(6or7) with all of its' geometry and textures intact? I can get them in ( although I've gotten alot of error messages with Lightwave files), but they never bring their UV mapping and textures with them...

Attached Link: PoseRay's site

Try PoseRay. It can import 3DS and Lightwave 5, 6 and later versions. It converts geometry, UV and most material information. After reading the model with PoseRay then you can export as Wavefront and import into Poser.

If you have any problems just let me know.

If your serious about importing go buy Polytrans from Okino. it supports about 30 import formats and about 25 export formats.

you can regroup the object, change its materials, add and remove parts, reverse vertex ordering. reduce polycounts, re-create smoothing groups. convert to triangles. plus hundreds of other options.

It can also be used to convert animation files (like BVH)

I forked out the cash for it. and it was well worth it. I can now use just about any object from any website regardless of format (still no .MAX support, as there seems to be some legal issues with that format)

PolyTrans for Windows XP/2003/2000/NT/98 $395 may be out of the range of most here

I found one in one of the threads awhile back some program that did dozens of formats, and it was free. Wish I remembered the name.

Blender, of all things, does support importing and exporting a good many formats, plus trying to be everything else under the sun..;) it's free...

Is there an importing utlity for 3DS and Lightwave for Mac? SS

from Lightwave, exporting them as wavefront obj files will bring in the uv's but not the textures, you just have to reload them to their surfaces.
