I just realized that Numeric provides a function to return the highest value in the array.  We can probably get the longest edge now just by using Numeric.argmax, without having to iterate over the lengths in longestedge.

I'm not sure whether Numeric might help with the float comparisons.  There could be benefits to trying to expand the use of the module.
