Subject: Poser & Linux?

Hi,

I know this question crops up every year or so and the answer is generally 'no', - But since technology keeps marching on, I thought I'd ask again.

Has anyone had any success in getting Poser to run in Linux, perhaps by using WINE or something similar?

A few years back I think someone posted that they had, but that it was too slow to be viable.  I was just wondering whether anyone knew if the situation had changed at all.

Thanks!

I've had Poser6 run in Linux, it's not perfect & I had to copy the font file from Poser's directory to the Windows Font directory in Wine but it does work.

Wow - that sounds like good news!  For about two years now, Poser has been the only program keeping me chained to the Windows operating system

Time for me to do some serious WINE research, I think!

Thanks!

I can't seem to find the font file from Poser's directory. Anyone know where to point me. I realy would like to try Linux, WINE and poser again. :)

the file you want is ASIFONT.FON, poser works for me without it being in the wine font folder but there's no text on anything.

With reports of Vista not supporting OpenGL, this is looking a tempting option for the future. Since Vista is being recommended as a new-computer-only OS, a shift to Apple Mac is also an option, but new hardware is out of my budget. What sort of PC are you using--processor power and RAM?

I was hesitating on Linux because of Poser and Carrara. Now that Carrara is no longer an option, I'm switching to Blender, but I can't work without Poser. If P7 runs under WINE, Windows is history at my house.

No support for OpenGL? Also no support for Type I PS fonts. MS-Greed at work. When we have an ethical government again, maybe they'll show MS what happens to sociopathic monopolies in a democracy. But maybe not. I won't hold my breath.

Quote - I was hesitating on Linux because of Poser and Carrara. Now that Carrara is no longer an option, I'm switching to Blender, but I can't work without Poser.

That's pretty much my position.  I've been using Blender on my windows machine for a while now anyway, and Wings3D, both of which are a) available in Linux and b) free!!

Blender really takes a bit of getting used to - at first the interface will drive you really, really crazy.  But if you stick with it, you'll find that what all the Blender users say is true:  Once you get used to it, you can really zoom along.

As for anyone wanting to switch to Linux - I would encourage them but offer a bit of warning: Don't believe it when people tell you that it's just like Windows, but better, and that there's equivalent software for anything you can get on a MS system, and that everything just works out of the box.  If you believe that hype, you could face frustration.

It can take a bit of effort to get a system going, but I've personally found Ubuntu linux to be the easiest and most painless I've tried.

Plus it's free - If you can't download a disk, you can even ask and they'll post you one, gratis!

Also they have a HECK of a user community.  I'm in lots of forums all over the web, and the Ubuntu community are the most friendly and helpful people I've found since..  well, since Renderosity!

No support for OpenGL

OpenGL support is provided by the graphics card drivers, not by Windows. What Vista has is sort of an OpenGL emulator via DirectX 10, which is far inferior to direct hardware OpenGL support. But Microsoft doesn't write the hardware drivers, the hardware vendors do. Look to nVidia and ATI for Vista OpenGL support.

No Type 1 support out of the box.

What a surprise. Microsoft is not allowed to. Type 1 is owned by Adobe AFAIK. So either they'd have to pay Adobe a LOT of money to incorporate Type 1 support directly (who's greedy here?) or they just don't incorporate it, and the users who want Type 1 fonts can buy them, plus the type manager, from Adobe.

I'm not sure if Poser 7 is distributed as a universal binary. If it is, it should be possible to get it to run under Linux. After all, Mac OSX is based on BSD, which isn't all that different from Linux.

WINE isn't bad at all, but doesn't incorporate all Windows functionality. And from what I've heard the graphics performance is lacking - not surprising, considering the extra layer of software everything has to go through. A multiboot system probably works better.
Unless you want to use 64 bit Windows programs. IF there is a 64 bit WINE, you can run 64 bit Windows apps, without having to shell out for Vista or XP Pro 64. IF.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
