Honestly, while I do understand that it'd be nice to achieve photrealism now and again, I have to wonder at why everyone thinks this is the holy grail of 3D? We should try venturing outside of what we know, create new and interesting environments and creatures. Stylization and believability is what made the Incredibles...well...Incredible. They weren't photoreal. Same goes for Monster House and Toy Story and...well, you get the idea. Photoealism is an admirable quest but it's not the be all and end all of 3D in my book. As far as I'm concerned, if you can create something that draws me in, regardless of how "real" something is, it's a better image for it.
So...where are the surreal? Where's the style? That's the question I'd be asking (and hope to answer soon).
