Dynamic hair CAN be a resource hog. And it CAN take ages to calculate.
But it doesn't have to. I'd suggest hunting down kirwyn's dynamic hair solution in freestuff - it uses a hair proxy figure with very few polygons that immensely cuts down on the calculation times, and a dynamic hair prop that's also optimized for performance. On a decently powered machine the hair can calculate in just a few seconds per frame.
The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
