I think its great to have a blog as long as you don't get too obsessive or addicted like me.  I currently have 3 blogs - 1 professional, 1 personal and one is a "Getting To Know You" blog.

It's starting to get crowded because it seems almost every new site you want to join allows you to have a blog.  I just joined myspace not too long ago and guess what - another blog I'm able to have.

It's too bad about the "spam" though but hopefully you have the option to moderate them before they are posted.
