"I want to be what I was
when I wanted to be what I am now"
I was reading the article over the weekend. I haven't bought that mag before, but read it every so often. Want to get this issue b/c there's some software on the CD I want. Later in the issue is a review of B6, but I felt it was a bit harsh--positive a bit, but only a small bit. Then came the pros/con section. I compare this to the Vue review article just before which sounded more positive eventhough no pricing was mentioned. And that lack of pricing info didn't appear in the pro/con section, which really should have because not knowing the pricing of something, or even the expected pricing range, is itself a con.
They did mention people have done some amazing things with Bryce, not just landscapes. Would liked to have seen one small image to give readers who don't know, a bit of example of what they mean by amazing. I mean, it's vague. But then again... limited publication space generates a level of vagueness.
But all in all it was good to see Bryce in the printed pages of that mag again, and not just as a vehicle of loyalty--loyal following--but as a contender with other software.
AS, I must confess that I really must go back and read your article again. I didn't see "Agent Smith" handle/alias and I'm not familiar with your, or anyone's here, Real World name, so I read it quickly. It has good points which got me thinking to buy the issue. Which I probably will this coming Saturday when I'm back at the bookstore (my saturday ritual.)
Congratulations A.S. What annoys me about this mag is the Q+A every month - can I make a toilet roll in Lightwave?, How do I make realistic sphere in 3d max?. I personally have learnt more about 3d here, practice at home and whilst contemplating life on a Sunday afternoon on my couch. It does however give one a reasonable idea of the state of the 3d industry.
D@Midnight: Kirk Dune! Kinda kewl name really, so I doubt it's his real monica. Sort of goes along with Brad Pitt, or one of those other hollywood type names, which is probably why he chose it...............

Yeah, freaked me out proper after someone had read one of my articles and came in here asking questions about it while quoting my REAL name, lol. Yup, Kirk Dunne.
Beside the first page of Q&A's are the all too tiny author profiles pics, with even smaller text that says something about me being the Renderosity Mod.
Unfortunately, tutorials take a lot more words that one would realize, and the articles are very limited (no more than 350 words, normally) by 3D World, so after initially writing up the shortest article I can muster, a lot of time is spent condensing words to get it under the limit.
All this is probably why most articles are quite simple to begin with. Save for the multi-page spreads on modeling with Rochr, lol. ;oD

bikermouse - that's (fortunately) about the only nickname I ever had in school "Dunkirk". Got it because of a teacher that would read roll call really fast, last names first.
Death_at_Midnight - As far as my story goes, I am writing for 3D World soley because of Rochr. He reccommended me to them. :o)
But, making your own speculative content and approaching magazines is the norm for freelance....well, anything freelance.

Congrats pal. Some great work there. The lighting and materials really kick butt.

Yep, sounds very familiar. The same procedure goes for multi-pagers. And it´s always amazing how much info you eventually can squeeze in with only a few sentences. :)
Quote - How do people get their works or articles published in a magazine like 3D World? Are they approached by the editors or someone sends the editors an email with sample work and saying "I wrote a nice article, would you like to publish it?"
If you have something that might be interesting for a mag, you should send the stuff in. If they like it, there´s a big chance they´ll want to publish it.
Personally i´ve almost always been contacted by the editors of a mag whenever they wanted something, but on a few occasions i´ve just sent in some images for a magazines showcase galleri, and got a job offer in return.
Let them know you exist. Send a few images and/or a gallery link, and ask if they´re interested in publishing them. Anything can work.

I wouldn't bother, meself. You sweat like hell to create a masterpiece tut, send it in, get it published and all of a sudden like - you're famous and everyone wants to know you. You get taken out to dinner, the Oscars, whatever, then some really gorgeous girl wants to marry you and you end up like every other hollywood couple, going to premiers, opening buildings and bridges, getting to be mayor..........can't see the point really. I mean, what would I do with all that money, the fame, the house in Bellaire..?
BTW Where do you live, Kirk? Oh Yeah! Hollywood.
Ack! I'd rather live on Mars.

*-I'm starting to agree, lol. The daily pounding of helicopters flying over or just hovering is finally taking its toll.
