I've never understood that impulse; if they want nude, why not just plain nude? 

Another part is that 1860's - 1890's clothing is very complicated.  Petticoats,
hoop skirts, vests, smoking jackets, weskits ....  all harder to make than
a 99.999% naked thong.   You should consider making your own.  It's
relatively easy now, with lots of tools available, and it's also lots of fun.
