you need to click on the Terrain canvas at the icon next to the downward pointing triangle on the top right.This opens the terrain canvas even more.then you will see to the right a long gradient filled box  almost the length of the terrain canvas with a huge bracket to it's right.Click on that bracket and hold and push it up until the background in the canvas turns red.

This removes the 'base 'of the terrain.
